Will outbound links to a related topic on an authority site help, hurt or be irrelevanent for SEO purposes. And if beneficially, should it be Nofollow?

Well put! I link out to a lot of .gov sites because they contain information that my customers find useful. As long as you are keeping your customers' needs in mind when writing content and/or linking, you are on the correct path.

Plenty of webmasters do not link out for selfish or strategic reasons.....

... but the web is all about linking.  That is why they call it "the web".

I link out a lot.  I believe that it makes my pages richer information sources.  I believe that it builds credibility.

If you were a visitor would you prefer a page that has no links or the same page that links out to information sources, sites with great information on directly related subjects?  Which of those would be recommended more via tweets, links, likes, emails?

So, my vote is that google gives credit for linking out and even if they don't your visitors will.

Thanks. Someone else told me it is a good sign of a trustworthy site. I was thinking of doing a link to a Wikipedia article or such of relevant reference material on topic.

I think it helps. I link to my BBB page to show credibility to both Google and my users. I also link to government websites. Everything is followed.

The only links I would <nofollow>would be sites I don't particularly trust, like a new site. </nofollow>

There is an argument that linking out might increase your rankings by a tiny bit.

So long as it's a decent, none malware hosting, none spammy site it won't have  an adverse effect.

With regard to follow/no-follow - if you trust the site and think it's passing a benefit to users then why put the no-follow on it?

This is another one of those grey areas, I think, where is there no perfect answer.

To draw an analogy from the world of politics and elections:

                      a) Your vote benefits the recipient more than it will benefit you.

                      b) If you were fighting the same election, casting a vote for a more prominent candidate who is a  competitor for that same position will hurt you more than benefiting you.

                      c) If you vote for the right candidate-  because that is the right thing to do--- it might eventually benefit you, in a roundabout sort of manner.

So, I'd apply the same rules when casting your vote for a website (ie. giving out links)----do vote, but cast your vote with care!

If I nofollow outbound external links to minimize link juice loss > is it a good/bad thing?

OK, imagine you have a blog, and you want to make each blog post authoritative so you link out to authority relevant websites for reference. In this case it is two external links per blog post, one to an authority website for reference and one to flickr for photo credit. And one internal link to another part of the website like the buy-now page or a related internal blog post. Now tell me if this is a good or bad idea. What if you nofollow the external links and leave the internal link untouched so all internal links are dofollow. The thinking is this minimizes loss of link juice from external links and keeps it flowing through internal links to pages within the website. Would it be a good idea to lay off the nofollow tag and leave all as do follow? or would this be a good way to link out to authority sites but keep the link juice internal? Your thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

Google cache is showing my UK homepage site instead of the US homepage and ranking the UK site in US

Hi There, When I check the cache of the US website (www.us.allsaints.com) Google returns the UK website. This is also reflected in the US Google Search Results when the UK site ranks for our brand name instead of the US site. The homepage has hreflang tags only on the homepage and the domains have been pointed correctly to the right territories via Google Webmaster Console. This has happened before in 26th July 2015 and was wondering if any had any idea why this is happening or if any one has experienced the same issueFDGjldR

Using both dofollow & nofollow links within the same blog site (but different post).

Hi all, I have been actively pursuing bloggers for my site in order to build page rank. My website sells women undergarments that are more on the exotic end. I noticed a large amount of prospective bloggers demand product samples. As already confirm, bloggers that are given "free" samples should use a rel=no follow attribute in their links. Unfortunately this does not build my page rank or transfer links juice. My question is this: is it advisable for them to also blog additional posts and include dofollow links? The idea is for the blogger to use a nofollow when posting about the sample and a regular link for a secondary post at a later time. What are you thoughts concerning this matter?

Outbound link to PDF vs outbound link to page

If you're trying to create a site which is an information hub, obviously linking out to authoritative sites is a good idea. However, does linking to a PDF have the same effect? e.g Linking to Google's SEO starter guide PDF, as opposed to linking to a google article on SEO. Thanks!

Why does a site have no domain authority?

A website was built and launched eight months ago, and their domain authority is 1.  When a site has been live for a while and has such a low DA, what's causing it?

10,000+ links from one site per URL--is this hurting us?

We manage content for  a partner site, and since much of their content is similar to ours, we canonicalized their content to ours. As a result, some URLs have anything from 1,000,000 inbound links / URL to 10,000+ links / URL --all from the same domain. We've noticed a 10% decline in traffic since this showed up in our webmasters account & were wondering if we should nofollow these links?

Transfer link juice from old to new site

Hi seomozzers, The design team is building a new website for one of our clients. My role is to make sure all the link juice is kept. My first question is, should I just make 301s or is there another technique to preserve all the link juice from the old to new site that I should be focusing on? Second Question is that ok to transfer link juice using dev urls like www.dev2.example.com (new site) or 182.3456.2333? or should I wait the creation of real urls to do link juice transfer? Thank you 🙂

Are URL shorteners building domain authority everytime someone uses a link from their service?

My understanding of domain authority is that the more links pointing to any page / resource on a domain, the greater the overall domain authority (and weight passed from outbound links on the domain) is. Because URL shorteners create links on their own domain that redirect to an off-domain page but link "to" an on-domain URL, are they gaining domain authority each time someone publishes a shortened link from their service? Or does Google penalize these sites specifically, or links that redirect in general? Or am I missing something else?
