We have five sites which are largely unrelated but for cross-promotional purpose our company wishes to cross link between all our sites, possibly in the footer.

I have warned about potential consequences of cross-linking in this way and certainly don't want our sites to be viewed as some sort of 'link ring' if they all link to one another.

Just wondering if linking between sites you own really is that much of an issue and whether we should  'nofollow' the links in order to prevent being slapped with any sort of penalty for cross-linking.

Thanks Irving. Yes, our marketing department would like to cross-promote our other sites, so the SEO element is not our main concern here. Clearly nofollow the links seems the best policy to ensure we cross link without falling foul of Google.

Nofollow all of the links between your sites and you can cross-promote all you want, safely. Link sitewide, in the footer wherever you like as long as they are nofollowed. .

If you are doing it for SEO though, I would probably not do that unless the sites are hosted in different places and ownership is not exposed. If they are completely separate you can one way link from the homepage (homepage only is best because it's always spidered and the homepage usually has the most PR) of the lesser sites to the main site.

It sounds to me though that this is for cross promotional and not for SEO so just nofollow them since that is completely safe. Just keep in mind that each place you nofollow a link to your other site you throw away a little bit of PR that would otherwise be passed to your internal pages.

Thanks Malcolm and Don for your responses. My feeling it that we should avoid linking site wide from the footer and maybe just link from the home page and no other and also 'nofollow' these links.

                  Hi Simon

BobGW last a very similar question last week in which elicited some nice responses from the community.

My advice is it is not hurtful to follow link them as long as we talking a few sites, but I would not do it site-wide like in the footer. Rather an example of a site we own which only links to the family sites on 1 page (where it made the most sense).

                  Hope that helps,

                  Don

If I were you I would most probably nofollow those links in the footer. It also depends on how you link them, I would avoid any exact match anchor text that links the sites in the footer as this does not provide any value and Google is known to target this method.

If it were brand sites say on different cTLDs like .co.uk, .com, .ca etc. then it would be ok to not use the nofollow, however as you mention they are largely unrelated. Cross-linking within the footer (sitewide) without a nofollow may end up looking like a link wheel or network.

If there is relevance in having those links, keep them but nofollow them and avoid using exact match anchors.

Is Chamber of Commerce membership a "paid" link, breaking Google's rules?

Hi guys, This drives me nuts. I hear all the time that any time value is exchanged for a link that it technically violates Google's guidelines. What about real organizations, chambers of commerce, trade groups, etc. that you are a part of that have online directories with DO-follow links. On one hand people will say these are great links with real value outside of search and great for local SEO..and on the other hand some hardliners are saying that these technically should be no-follow. Thoughts???

                      ScreamingFrog won't crawl my site.

Hey guys, My site is Netspiren.dk and when I use a tool like Screaming Frog or Integrity, it only crawls my homepage and menu's - not product-pages. Examples
                      A menu: http://www.netspiren.dk/pl/Helse-Kosttilskud-Blandingsolie_57699.aspx
A product: http://www.netspiren.dk/pi/All-Omega-3-6-9-180-kapsler_1412956_57699.aspx Is it because the products are being loaded in Javascript?
                      What's your recommendation? All best,
                      Fred.

                      Wrong titles in site links

Hello fellow marketers, I have found this weird thing with our website in the organic results. The sitelinks in the SERP shows wrong written text. As in grammatically incorrect text. My question is where does Google get the text from? It is not the page title as we can see it. kKsFv0X.png

Links from new sites with no link juice

Hi Guys, Do backlinks from a bunch of new sites pass any value to our site?  I've heard a lot from some "SEO experts" say that it is an effective link building strategy to build a bunch of new sites and link them to our main site.  I highly doubt that... To me, a new site is a new site, which means it won't have any backlinks in the beginning (most likely), so a backlink from this site won't pass too much link juice. Right? In my humble opinion  this is not a good strategy any more...if you build new sites for the sake of getting links. This is just wrong. But, if you do have some unique content and you want to share with others on that particular topic, then you can definitely create a blog and write content and start getting links. And over time, the domain authority will increase,  then a backlink from this site will become more valuable? I am not a SEO expert myself, so I am eager to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

                      Removed Site-wide links

Hi there, I have recently removed quite a lot of site-wide links leaving the only link on homepage's of some websites, since doing this I have seen a dramatic drop on my keywords, going from position 2-3 to nowhere. Has anyone else experienced anything like this, should I expect to see a return on these keywords? Thanks

Duplicate internal links on page, any benefit to nofollow

Link spam is naturally a hot topic amongst SEO's, particularly post Penguin. While digging around forums etc, I watched a video blog from Matt Cutts posted a while ago that suggests that Google only pays attention to the first instance of a link on the page As most websites will have multiple instances of a links (header, footer and body text), is it beneficial to nofollow the additional instances of the link? Also as the first instance of a link will in most cases be within the header nav, does that then make the content link text critical or can good on page optimisation be pulled from the title attribute? I would appreciate the experiences and thoughts Mozzers thoughts on this thanks in advance!

Transfer link juice from old to new site

Hi seomozzers, The design team is building a new website for one of our clients. My role is to make sure all the link juice is kept. My first question is, should I just make 301s or is there another technique to preserve all the link juice from the old to new site that I should be focusing on? Second Question is that ok to transfer link juice using dev urls like www.dev2.example.com (new site) or 182.3456.2333? or should I wait the creation of real urls to do link juice transfer? Thank you 🙂

There's a website I'm working with that has a .php extension. All the pages do. What's the best practice to remove the .php extension across all pages?

Client wishes to drop the .php extension on all their pages (they've got around 2k pages). I assured them that wasn't necessary. However, in the event that I do end up doing this what's the best practices way (and easiest way) to do this? This is also a WordPress site. Thanks.
