          Using the redirect function in cPanel I am able to create the 301 redirect that I need to not have duplicate content issues in Moz. However, the issue now is that when I try to login to domain.com/login it redirects to domain.com/index.php?q=admin, which is not a page on the site and I can no longer login.

          I have checked the htaccess file and it appears that the entry is correct ( I originally thought that the cPanel redirect was not writing access correctly ). I am not sure if there is a small detail that I am missing with this or not.

          So my main question is how do I redirect my site to remove dup content errors while retaining the login at domain.com/admin and not be redirected to domain.com/index.php?q=admin? Thank you ahead of time for your assistance.

              Hi Andrea,

              This looks like a drupal issue, not a cpanel issue and I am not that familiar with Drupal.

              That being said, are you sure the above htaccess is the complete file that works? If you remove the lines that you say create the issue, you still have this line: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA] which is the one that handles rewriting urls to the form q=admin.

              You could try moving the 2 lines of code:
              RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com$
              RewriteRule ^(.*)$ "http://domain.com/$1" [R=301,L]

              To immediately below the  'RewriteEngine on' line (and obviously putting your domain in place of domain.com) so that they run first before the rest of the rules. This might work, but to me the above looks like it will be rewriting to q=admin anyway, so maybe this is a drupal setup issue that I am unfamiliar with.

                The following is the full htaccess file for the site in question. The CMS that we are using on this site is drupal, with cPanel on the backend server side. I originally thought there was a line that of code that was causing this ( I will be honest, I do not know what each line commands) but when I checked it against other htaccess files the code appeared to be the same.

                Options +Indexes FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI

                Order allow,deny
                Allow from all

                RewriteEngine on

                RewriteBase /

                RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

                RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

                RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !=/favicon.ico

                RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

                RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com$
                RewriteRule ^(.*)$ "http://domain.com/$1" [R=301,L]

                  Hi Andrea,

                  Is that the only code you have in the htaccess file, or are there more lines? What cms are you using?

                  it seems to me that your cms (or something else) is trying to rewrite internal site search terms (hence the q=admin) but there must be more in your htaccess file for this to be happening. Care to mention the site so I can have a quick look?

                    That is the code that I have currently in my htaccess file. However, the issue is that with this code in my htaccess file I am having an issue where when i type in the URL to log into the site;

                    domain.com/admin

                    With the redirect active I get redirected to the following URL structure;

                    domain.com/index.php?q=admin

                    which is a page that does not exist and therefore gives me a 404 error.

                    If I remove

                    RewriteEngine On
                    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com$ [NC]
                    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

                    I can log in. However, this brings back all of the duplicate www. and non-www. issues.

                      Hi Andrea,

                      What code are you using to to the redirects? If you can edit the htaccess file directly then simply drop  the following code into it and all calls to a www url should be redirected to the non www url. No index.html or anything else should be added if you use this, it simply redirects all www to non www urls.

                      RewriteEngine On
                      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com$ [NC]
                      RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

                      Is that what you are after?

                        Lynn,

                        Sorry for the vagueness of the question. The issues I am getting in my Moz report is duplicate content issues resulting from the indexing of both the www. and non-www. sites. I have set my preferred url in WT to be the non-www. and so I want to 301 redirect the www to non-www so I am done in one step, but it appears that in doing this in C-panel causes an issue with the login by appending the /index.html at the end of the login url creating a 404 error. I know I can remove the code to login again from the htaccess file but in removing the redirect I get duplicate content errors again. I was hoping to avoid redirecting every individual page. But is that the solution? Thanks again for the info.

                          Hi Andrea,

                          I am not sure exactly what dup content issues you are trying to correct...

                          If you have ftp access then you can simply take out the last lines that were added through cpanel and that should then let you login again. As for the correct setup, give us a few more details on what exactly you are trying to achieve.

                            Allow Embedding on a YouTube but Only for Specific Sites

                            Hello, This is more of a technical question but does anyone know if it’s possible to allow embedding on YouTube videos only for specific sites? We want to restrict embedding on our videos but still be able to embed them on our domain. I’m already listed as the primary owner and have the channel linked to my personal email (same email used to upload videos) but when I go to the below link mentioned on Google's Page for Restrict Embedding (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6301625) it says I don’t have permission to access that page for both my personal account and channel. The documentation states it's possible to "Block embedding on all sites or apps except for those URLs or app package names you enter in the text box." but I can't seem to find it. I can only find the option to turn it off/on completely. https://www.youtube.com/content_owner_settings I noticed my personal email hasn't been verified; would that make a difference here? Any help or insight on how to approach this would be very much appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from all of you!
                            Thank you in advance.
                            Best,

                            Someone redirected his website to ours

                            Hi all, I have strange issue as someone redirected website http://bukmachers.pl to ours https://legalnibukmacherzy.pl We don't know exactly what to do with it. I checked backlinks and the website had some links which now redirect to us. I also checked this website on wayback machine and back in 2017 this website had some low quality content  but in 2018 they made similar redirection to current one but to different website (our competitor). Can such redirection be harmful for us?  Should we do something with this or leave it, as google stop encouraging to disavow low quality links.

                            Advice on redirects for a category I want to reuse.

                            Hi, We have a current category set up that is starting to rank OK but we are going through a site re-build and this category URL will now better describe a new category of products. My dilemma is if I 301 redirect the current url to my new category I won't be able to use the URL for the new one. But if I don't redirect it will the pages that have already been ranked under this url then confuse customers and search engines. For example - Products and sub-categories under the URL /personalised-toys will now become /personalised-toys-for-boys but I want to use the /personalised-toys URL for a different set of sub categories and products. Any assistance or ideas or just definitely don't do it in a particular way would be greatly appreciated

                            301 Redirecting from domain to subdomain

                            We're taking on a redesign of our corporate site on our main domain.  We also have a number of well established, product based subdomains. There are a number of content pages that currently live on the corporate site that rank well, and bring in a great deal of traffic, though we are considering placing 301 redirects in place to point that traffic to the appropriate pages on the subdomains. If redirected correctly, can we expect the SEO value of the content pages currently living on the corporate site to transfer to the subdomains, or will we be negatively impacting our SEO by transferring this content from one domain to multiple subdomains?

                            Geo-Redirect: good idea or not?

                            Hi Mozzers, The background: I have this very corporate .com domain which is used worldwide. Next to that, we have another .com domain which is specifically created for the US visitors. Within the organic rankings, we notice that our corporate domain is ranking much better in the US. Many visitors are arriving on this domain. As it is a corporate domain being used worldwide, they get lost. My questions: I know there are ways to redirect by location. Would it be smart to automatically redirect US visitors for the corporate domain to the commercial US-specific domain? Is it possible to only redirect US visitors and leave the website as it is for visitors from other countries. Won't this harm the corporate website (organically) worldwide? If this would be a good idea, any recommended plugins or concrete procedures? Thank you so much for helping me out!

                            301 Redirect Showing Up as Thousands Of Backlinks?

                            Hi Everyone, I'm currently doing quite a large back link audit on my company's website and there's one thing that's bugging me. Our website used to be split into two domains for separate areas of the business but since we have merged them together into one domain and have 301 redirected the old domain the the main one. But now, both GWT and Majestic are telling me that I've got 12,000 backlinks from that domain?  This domain didn't even have 12,000 pages when it was live and I only did specific 301 redirects (ie. for specific URL's and not an overall domain level 301 redirect) for about 50 of the URL's with all the rest being redirected to the homepage. Therefore I'm quite confused about why its showing up as so many backlinks - Old redirects I've done don't usually show as a backlink at all. UPDATE: I've got some more info on the specific back links. But now my question is - is having this many backlinks/redirects from a single domain going to be viewed negatively in Google's eyes? I'm currently doing a reconsideration request and would look to try and fix this issue if having so many backlinks from a single domain would be against Google's guidelines. Does anybody have any ideas? Probably somthing very obvious. Thanks! Sam

                            Multiple 301 Redirects for the Same Page

                            Hi Mozzers, What happens if I have a trail of 301 redirects for the same page? For example,
                            SiteA.com/10 --> SiteA.com/11 --> SiteA.com/13 --> SiteA.com/14 I know I lose a little bit of link juice by 301 redirecting.
                            The question is, would the link juice look like this for the example above? 100% --> 90% --> 81% -->72.9%
                            Or just 100% -----------------------------------------> 90% Does this link juice refer to juice from inbound links or links between internal pages on my site? Thanks!

                            Redirect a subdomain to a subdirectory for SEO purposes.

                            Hi, I have a site on wordpress and I want to add eCommerce to it. We want to go with Shopify but Shopify only allows to host their platform on a subdomain. I like to have it on a subdorectory, so my question is: Would it make sense to redirect the whole subdomain to a subdirectory (move everything from shop.domain.com to domain.com/shop) for SEO purposes? Would Google see these pages as if they were part of the main domain? Thanks! Julien
