How long on average does it take for a canonical tag to work? Understand that canonicals are just a suggestion, but after adding a canonical tag and submitting the page via Google fetch, assuming Google follows the canonical, would you expect it to work after a day or two or does it take longer?

We added canonicals to old PPC landing pages that are ranking organically, though our new landing pages (which we want to rank organically) are not identical and have a bit more content/features. They are similar though.

Canonicals were added to the old pages (pointing to new pages) and requested indexing via search console. Old pages are still ranking and new pages not so much.

FYI we are unable to 301 old PPC pages due to other non negotiable reasons unfortunately. Thanks.

Assuming Google crawls the page, how long do you think it will take before we know whether Google is following canonical tags? By follow I mean whether they are following the signal and ranking the canonical link.

We requested crawling on all pages via google fetch.

                Hi SoulSurer8

It all depends on how frequently your pages are crawled by Google. If you search for a page in Google and check when it was last cached then this will give you an indication of how long it may take. Under the result in SERPS there is a green down arrow next to the URL click that and hit cached. (see image attached) This will bring up a page with a date at the top which is the last time that Google cached the page. It will depend on how deep the structure is, so if a page s three clicks down then, of course, it will be indexed less frequently than the home page.

Check a few deep pages and compare them with the home page and you will see that in some cases it has been up to 6 weeks since the last indexing. You can speed this up a little with a Google fetch from Search Console on particular pages but that is the reality.

                Regards

                Nigel

                  Hello there,

In my experience it depends on the case, some cases  took a few days and some other took over 3 weeks.

Remember that there is no guarantee that new page will ocupy the same ranking position because depending on the optimization and page rank, google will rank that page in the position it deserves.

                  Hope it helps.
                  Best luck.
                  GR.

I want to use canonical tag in any product to the parent category.
Is this a right use of the canonical?
Category page I'm talking about is : Finger bits If I understand how to use canonical tags I can improve all my category pages. thanks marco

Do H2 tags carry more weight than h4 tags?

Of course H tags are key signals for relevance in search.  Does an h2 tag send a significantly "louder" signal than an h4 tag?

Server is taking too long to respond - What does this mean?

A client has 3 sites that he would like for me to look at.  Whenever I attempt to on my home internet I get this message: The connection has timed out
The server is taking too long to respond. When I take my iphone off wifi and use AT&T, the site comes up fine.  What is going on here?

Isnt it better to have headlines in H1 and H2 tags instead of p tags?

I am working with a simple site http://http://lightsigns.com/Uniko_Manufacturing_Limited.html They seek more SEO traffic. However, the two big headlines that read "Wholesale Supply to the Sign and Display Industries" which is on line 241 and 242 of the source code, its in a p tag, i.e. <p <span class="webkit-html-tag">style</p <span>="padding-top: 0pt; " class="paragraph_style_1">Wholesale Supply to the and <p <span class="webkit-html-tag">style</p <span>="padding-bottom: 0pt; " class="paragraph_style_1">Sign and Display Industries Likewise, the product titles are in p tags, also. For example, on the Slide-in Light Box product page, http://lightsigns.com/Slide_In_light_box.html , I have done keyword research and no one is using the words slide in light box.Plus, it is also a p tag, ie. line 43 reads style="padding-bottom: 0pt; padding-top: 0pt; " class="paragraph_style">Slide-in Light Box If I suggest that they make an H2 tag with SEO-optimized keywords such as Display Light Box - Slide-In LIght Box, would this indeed help SEO? In summary, is it correct to say that H1 and H2 tags are stronger signals to the search bots of what the page is about?

                    Tags showing up in Google

Yesterday a user pointed out to me that Tags were being indexed in Google search results and that was not a good idea. I went into my Yoast settings and checked the "nofollow, index" in my Taxanomies, but when checking the source code for no follow, I found nothing. So instead, I went into the robot.txt and disallowed /tag/ Is that ok? or is that a bad idea? The site is The Tech Block for anyone interested in looking.

We've inherited some sites from another developer that had the following tag: All references I can find to it are from 2004.  What is the purpose and is it worth including in pages/sites we build?

Should there be a canonical tag on my 404 error page?

In my crawl diagnostics, I notice some 4xx client errors. They are appearing for pages that no longer exist, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Shouldn't they just be dealt as 404's? Anyway, on closer inspection I noticed that my 404 error page contains a canonical tag which points to the missing page. Could this be the issue? Is it a good idea to remove the canonical tag from this error page? Thanks.
