          Hi there!

I was just wondering if the granular options of the Organization schema, like Educational Organization (http://schema.org/EducationalOrganization) and CollegeOrUniversity (http://schema.org/CollegeOrUniversity) schema work the same when it comes to pulling data into the knowledge graph.

I've typically always used the Organization schema for customers but was wondering if there are any drawbacks for going deep into the hierarchy of schema.

          Cheers 😄

The schema interacts with Google's knowledge graph by providing structured data markup on web pages. This schema helps search engines understand and categorize content related to educational institutions, including details like name, location, courses offered, and contact information. When Google's crawler identifies this schema, it may enhance the visibility and accuracy of information about educational organizations in search results and potentially contribute to the knowledge graph's database of structured information.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any studies of that nature. I typically look at it pragmatically -- is there a change in SERP features related to that schema (i.e. is there direct, measurable benefit)? So far, I haven't seen any. On the other hand, I don't see any evidence of harm, as long as the schema is appropriate and well-structured. It just comes down to where you want to put your time/effort.

                Hi Dr. Meyers,

Many thanks for the response, it's kind of in line with what I was thinking.

If the data is structured and presented in the same clean format as the parent Organization schema then I can't see why Google would not treat it in the same way as a data point.

I don't suppose by chance you've come across any solid studies about schema, far down in the hierarchy, and the impacts it has.

The only studies I can find are of generic schema, and being very data driven I was hoping to find some evidence for using these. 🙂

I haven't seen the specific Educational Organization schema have an impact on SERPs, but they're diverging so much lately that it's hard to say. There are some specialty carousels like this:

                  https://www.google.com/search?q=best+colleges+in+wyoming

...that could be using it, but I suspect this is coming from the broader Knowledge Graph. Individual colleges have Knowledge Panels, but a lot of that data is coming from GMB listings, best I know.

There's no real harm, if the data is appropriate and well-structured (i.e. you're not putting a university mark-up on a sandwich shop page). The drawback is basically spending the time and energy and getting nothing in return.

I guess the other drawback is that Google could use that data to feed its own internal database but not give you anything in return. That's a drawback of basically everything in SEO right now, though.

After hack and remediation, thousands of URL's still appearing as 'Valid' in google search console. How to remedy?

I'm working on a site that was hacked in March 2019 and in the process, nearly 900,000 spam links were generated and indexed. After remediation of the hack in April 2019, the spammy URLs began dropping out of the index until last week, when Search Console showed around 8,000 as "Indexed, not submitted in sitemap" but listed as "Valid" in the coverage report and many of them are still hack-related URLs that are listed as being indexed in March 2019, despite the fact that clicking on them leads to a 404. As of this Saturday, the number jumped up to 18,000, but I have no way of finding out using the search console reports why the jump happened or what are the new URLs that were added, the only sort mechanism is last crawled and they don't show up there. How long can I expect it to take for these remaining urls to also be removed from the index? Is there any way to expedite the process? I've submitted a 'new' sitemap several times, which (so far) has not helped. Is there any way to see inside the new GSC view why/how the number of valid URLs in the indexed doubled over one weekend?

Does Google ignore content styled with 'display:none'?

Do you know if an H1 within a div that has a 'display: none' style applied will still be crawled and evaluated by Google? We have that situation on this page on line 136: view-source:https://www.junk-king.com/services/items-we-take/foreclosure-cleanouts Of course we also have an H1 up at the top of the page and are concerned that the second one will cause interference with our SEO efforts. I've seen conflicting and inconclusive information on line - not sure. Thanks for any help.

I think Google Analytics is mis-reporting organic landing pages.

I have multiple clients whose Google Analytics accounts are showing me that some of the top performing organic landing pages (in terms of highest conversion rates) look like this: /cart.php /quote /checkout.php /finishorder.php /login.php In some cases, these pages are blocked by Robots.txt. In other cases they are not even indexed at all in Google. These pages are clearly part of the conversion process. A couple of them are links sent out when a cart is abandoned, etc. - is it possible they actually came in organically but then re-entered via one of these links which is what Google is calling the organic landing page? How is it possible that these pages would be the top performing landing pages for organic visitors?

Is Chamber of Commerce membership a "paid" link, breaking Google's rules?

Hi guys, This drives me nuts. I hear all the time that any time value is exchanged for a link that it technically violates Google's guidelines. What about real organizations, chambers of commerce, trade groups, etc. that you are a part of that have online directories with DO-follow links. On one hand people will say these are great links with real value outside of search and great for local SEO..and on the other hand some hardliners are saying that these technically should be no-follow. Thoughts???

Putting "noindex" on a page that's in an iframe... what will that mean for the parent page?

If I've got a page that is being called in an iframe, on my homepage, and I don't want that called page to be indexed.... so I put a noindex tag on the called page (but not on the homepage) what might that mean for the homepage?  Nothing?  Will Google, Bing, Yahoo, or anyone else, potentially see that as a noindex tag on my homepage?

If I create a good community in my particular field on my SEO site and have a quality Q&A section like this etc (ripping of MOZ's idea here sorry, I hope it's ok) will the long term returns be worth the effort of creating and man ageing this. Is the user created content of as much use as I think it will be?

Include Cross Domain Canonical URL's in Sitemap - Yes or No?

I have several sites that have cross domain canonical tags setup on similar pages.  I am unsure if these pages that are canonicalized to a different domain should be included in the sitemap.  My first thought is no, because I should only include pages in the sitemap that I want indexed. On the other hand, if I include ALL pages on my site in the sitemap, once Google gets to a page that has a cross domain canonical tag, I'm assuming it will just note that and determine if the canonicalized page is the better version.  I have yet to see any errors in GWT about this.   I have seen errors where I included a 301 redirect in my sitemap file.  I suspect its ok, but to me, it seems that Google would rather not find these URL's in a sitemap, have to crawl them time and time again to determine if they are the best page, even though I'm indicating that this page has a similar page that I'd rather have indexed.
