I'm frustrated, so want to ask a stupid question....My site..
outranks my biggest competitor in most Moz catagories...
...EXCEPT Facebook likes...(he has a ton) **And yet, rainbowreef.us outranks me in most keywords on
Google?! I know it's not simple...but Can anyone take a quick peek and give me any insight as to why??? **Example "Dive Key Largo" keyword...he is #1 and I am #5...typical in the most important keywords!

Hi there,
Unfortunately, this isn't something that anyone can tell you without at least a few hours of research - Google has a pretty complicated algorithm!
I can tell you some more things to take into account, in addition to Bob's list:
- **Keyword relevance: **For the search queries that you want to rank for, does Sea Dwellers look the most relevant? Do you use the phrase that you want to rank for in your page title, the h1 of the page, and on the page itself? Be careful not to sound like you're writing for robots rather than humans, but using the exact same phrase as you want to rank for definitely helps with rankings.
- **Inbound link relevance: **Where did you get the links to your site? More links from relevant sites (for example, unsponsored posts about the best company to dive with) are going to help with local queries like "dive Key Largo."
- **Potential spam / paid links: **If you've paid for links or have spammy links coming to your site, Moz may have an inflated version of your PA or DA metrics, since it isn't as good at recognizing that as Google is (though they're working on it with their spam score).
Good luck! If you're feeling especially frustrated about this, I'd recommend hiring an SEO to give you some definite answers.
Best,
Kristina

Even if your site outranks the other site in Moz, it doesn't mean anything. Moz is not Google, they have different ranking signals (have a second read at what Bob said) and the most important thing, Moz doesn't show all the links websites have, it shows only the links it found. This being the case, Google is probably aware of more links (hidden ones as well), so that's why your website is outranked.

Hi sdwellers,
Tools give you an insight in what might be the cause of ranking problems but they don't tell the whole story about a websites rankings. Algorithms are very complex and they do take in account a lot of different signals. A few signals that are very hard to take into account by any tool.
- Dwell time (the time people spend on your site, and if they do or do not find the information needed)
- The total backlink profile. Moz has its own index (PA/DA are based on this index) which only covers a fraction of all the links. A normal backlink audit would at least combine links from three different sources including the links from Google Webmaster Tools
- Reviews about your business.
If you are serious about beating your competition I would dive deeper in SEO, or hire an expert. That said, I can give you a few tips based on my first impression of your website.
- The black text (on the blue background) above and under your website are very toxic. This is a classic spam tactic which gets you discounted by Search Engines.
- Your website isn’t mobile friendly (this will become an important ranking factor on 21 of April this year (next week). Google has been talking about this date for a while.
- On first sign, I would say you could make your content more engaging. Your competitors website give a whole different feeling. I would take a good look at your design and the use of visual content. Scuba diving is all about a life time experience, keep people hooked to your site and you dwell time (and sales) will go up.
I hope this helps! Good luck, and I would love to hear if you could make a difference the coming months.
_PS. Facebook likes aren’t used to rank website. Although a big social audience can help you get more backlinks which help a lot. _

Google Site search operator showing different results than Search Console
Hey everybody, I am seeing some confusing results. I am seeing that in the back of our Search Console we are showing around 4,500 sites indexed. If I use the "site" operator in google, only 2820 show up... any thoughts as to why that happens?

How to deal with auto generated pages on our site that are considered thin content
Hi there, Wondering how to deal w/ about 300+ pages on our site that are autogenerated & considered thin content. Here is an example of those pages: https://app.cobalt.io/ninp0 The pages are auto generated when a new security researcher joins our team & then filled by each researcher with specifics about their personal experience. Additionally, there is a fair amount of dynamic content on these pages that updates with certain activities. These pages are also getting marked as not having a canonical tag on them, however, they are technically different pages just w/ very similar elements. I'm not sure I would want to put a canonical tag on them as some of them have a decent page authority & I think could be contributing to our overall SEO health. Any ideas on how I should deal w/ this group of similar but not identical pages?

Links to Your Site: No Data Available in Google Search Console
The site I am working on did not have their site submitted to Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools). I submitted the site and a sitemap that auto updates. Google is crawling the site daily (about 30 pages a day). Under Search Traffic > Links to Your Site it shows no data is availible. I thought it was because it was a newly submitted site, but it has been two months now. Moz seems to have the same issue. Moz does show inbound links, but their are some that we think should really help us that are not shown. For instance, the Dallas Morning News wrote this article. They have a high DA and PA. Also, iliveindallas.com has an article about us that is still on the front page. That was a few weeks ago but also does not show up on Moz or Google SC. We are trying to be selective about the links we are getting. That they are follow links from reputable sites. Worried that both Google and Moz are not showing them.

Comparing New vs. Old Keyword Difficulty Scores
We've had a few questions regarding the new Keyword Difficulty score used in Keyword Explorer, and how it compares to the old score in our stand-alone Keyword Difficulty tool. Specifically, people want to know why some scores are much lower using the new tool. There a general discussion of the math behind the tool in this post: Keyword Research in 2016: Going Beyond Guesswork One of the problems we had with the original Keyword Difficulty score is that, because it's based on our Page Authority (PA) score and PA tends toward the middle of the 0-100 range, Difficulty got a bit bunched up. A Difficulty score in the low-to-mid 20s (via the old tool) is actually very low. So, we set out to re-scale the new tool to broaden that score and use more of the 0-100 range. We hoped this would allow more granularity and better comparisons. While the logic is sound, we're concerned that we may have been too aggressive in this re-scaling, given recent feedback. So, we're going to be analyzing a large set of keywords (anonymously, of course) that people have run through the tool to see if too many Difficulty scores seem too low. If they do, we'll make some adjustments to the math. In the meantime, please be aware that low scores may appear lower in the new tool and very high scores may appear higher. We wanted to address some of the limitations in V1 and feedback over the years, and so the old and new scores really can't be compared directly in a meaningful way. We're sorry for any confusion that has caused, and we will re-evaluate if necessary.

I am looking for SEO tips specifically for magazine site's
I have a client who has a website that is based on a magazine. They make their money through advertisement I am primarily an inbound marketer I would be very grateful if anyone out there has any tips for a site that has been around for quite a while ( over 10 years) we are transforming the site from HTML into WordPress then hosting it with a fast managed WordPress host using CDN. I feel the lack of links is an obvious place to start however if there's anything specific to magazine based websites I would be more than grateful to hear your opinions. Thank you all in advance. Sincerely, Thomas von Zickell

What analysis exists for Out Bound Links (OBL) from your site
Hi Maybe I am missing this but I can''t seem to see it. I am doing some analysis on a client's site and want to get a csv list of links from the client's site to external sites. So what I am looking for is a list of Out Bound Links (OBL) from the client's site. I want to run these past a black list / bad link neighborhood checking script I have. This would actually be a nice feature in SEO Moz Pro, unless it actually already does and I am just missing it or not setting filters correctly. Thanks Trevor
