When should you 410 pages instead of 404

Hi All, We have approx 6,000 - 404 pages. These are for categories etc we don't do anymore and there is not near replacement etc so basically no reason or benefit to have them at all. I can see in GWT , these are still being crawled/found and therefore taking up crawler bandwidth. Our SEO agency said we should 410 these pages?.. I am wondering what the difference is and how google treats them differently ?. Do anyone know When should you 410 pages instead of 404 ? thanks Pete

Many thanks Patrick, I will take a look at the article etc. These pages are gone and wont' be coming back , so It looks like a 410 would be fine. Many thanks Pete

Hi Pete Take a look at this article from Search Engine Watch on how Google handles 410 codes. In short, 404 means "page not found", while a 410 means "this page is gone and we do not expect it to come back". If this is in fact the circumstance - the page is gone, not coming back - then a 410 lets Google know that that is official, and you can now ignore this page. A couple of things to note from the article from Matt Cutts... "If we see a 410, then the site crawling system says, OK we assume the webmasters knows what they're doing because they went off the beaten path to deliberately say this page is gone," he said. "So they immediately convert that 410 to an error, rather than protecting it for 24 hours. So when you do serve a 410 status code on a page that really isn't gone permanently, you haven't killed that page off permanently. Googlebot will return the check and see if the page needs to be returned to the index. "Now don't take this too much the wrong way, we'll still go back and recheck and make sure are those pages really gone, or maybe the pages have come back alive again," Cutts said. "And I wouldn't rely on the assumption that that behavior will always be exactly the same. "In general, sometimes webmasters get a little too caught up in the tiny little details and so if the page is gone, it's fine to serve a 404, if you know it's gone for real it's fine to serve a 410," he said. "But we'll design our crawling system to try and be robust so that if your site goes down, or if you get hacked, or whatever that we try to make sure that we can still find the good content whenever it's available." As far as why your 404s are appearing in your Webmaster Tools; I would check your internal links and make sure they are up to date, and also that your sitemap is up to date. If pages need to be redirected to more relevant pages, make sure those are doing so, otherwise, create a custom 404 page so that users can navigate or find what they need. 410s aren't usually necessary, so I would discuss with your SEO team their reasoning. Review what I passed over though! Hope this helps, good luck!

		Images on their own page?
Hi Mozers, We have images on their own separate pages that are then pulled onto content pages. Should the standalone pages be indexable? On the one hand, it seems good to have an image on it's own page, with it's own title. On the other hand, it may be better SEO for crawler to find the image on a content page dedicated to that topic. Unsure. Would appreciate any guidance! Yael Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | yaelslater1

Pages with excessive number of links
Hi all, I work for a retailer and I've crawled our website with RankTracker for optimization suggestions. The main suggestion is "Pages with excessive number of links: 4178" The page with the largest amount of links has 634 links (627 internal, 7 external), the lowest 382 links (375 internal, 7 external). However, when I view the source on any one of the example pages, it becomes obvious that the site's main navigation header contains 358 links, so every new page starts with 358 links before any content. Our rivals and much larger sites like argos.co.uk appear to have just as many links in their main navigation menu. So my questions are: 1. Will these excessive links really be causing us a problem or is it just 'good practice' to have fewer links Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Bee159
 2. Can I use 'no follow' to stop Google etc from counting the 358 main navigation links
 3. Is have 4000+ pages of your website all dumbly pointing to other pages a help or hindrance?
 4. Can we 'minify' this code so it's cached on first load and therefore loads faster? Thank you.0

Should my back links go to home page or internal pages
Right now we rank on page 2 for many KWs, so should i now focus my attention on getting links to my home page to build domain authority or continue to direct links to the internal pages for specific KWs? I am about to write some articles for several good ranking sites and want to know whether to link my company name (same as domain name) or KW to the home page or use individual KWs to the internal pages - I am only allowed one link per article to my site. Putting "noindex" on a page that's in an iframe... what will that mean for the parent page?
If I've got a page that is being called in an iframe, on my homepage, and I don't want that called page to be indexed.... so I put a noindex tag on the called page (but not on the homepage) what might that mean for the homepage? Nothing? Will Google, Bing, Yahoo, or anyone else, potentially see that as a noindex tag on my homepage? Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Philip-DiPatrizio0

Do you add 404 page into robot file or just add no index tag?
Hi, got different opinion on this so i wanted to double check with your comment is. We've got /404.html page and I was wondering if you would add this page to robot text so it wouldn't be indexed or would you just add no index tag? What would be the best approach? Thanks! Does an H1 have to be at the top of a page?
Because H1 "may" carry some weight with Google does it have to be placed at the top of the page? Can I place it towards the bottom of the page instead in normal body size? My goal is to keep the main keywords in the H1 but create a much friendlier title for the customer to read at the top of the page. Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | PottyScotty0

Generating 404 Errors but the Pages Exist
Hey I have recently come across an issue with several of a sites urls being seen as a 404 by bots such as Xenu, SEOMoz, Google Web Tools etc. The funny thing is, the pages exist and display fine. This happens on many of the pages which use the Modx CMS, but the index is fine. The wordpress blog in /blog/ all works fine. The only thing I can think of is that I have a conflict in the htaccess, but troubleshooting this is difficult, any tool I have found online seem useless. Have tried to rollback to previous versions but still does not work. Anyone had any experience of similar issues? Many thanks K. Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Found0

Is 404'ing a page enough to remove it from Google's index?
We set some pages to 404 status about 7 months ago, but they are still showing in Google's index (as 404's). Is there anything else I need to do to remove these?
