          Hi Guys,

Following on from a question i asked last week in regard to a 301 http://www.seomoz.org/q/301-redirect-have-no-ranking

I was thinking that i had some kind of issue on the site, although i have gone over it with a fine tooth comb i cannot find any issue's and from the amount of reads the thread has had im sure if there was something obvious it would have been pointed out.

So i am quite confident the 301 from site A to site B is fine and working as intended, so my question is how long should it take until the juice is passed From site A to Site B as its 9 weeks now and still down 85% on traffic and even text for my home page if copied into the search bar don't bring up my site

Bing is fine and did not see any real traffic drops but Google is not giving me back the rankings i had prior

Whenever i have done a 301 before the rankings pretty steady and i see no real loss in rankings but this time ... painful

          all changes in WMT made
          Canonical tag implemented
all Pages 301 and correct 200 response from the targeted page
          Sitemap Updated
Many Links Changed from Old site to new (including DMOZ)
          no Robots text Blocking directory's
          Google crawling freely and regularly

The strange thing is New content is indexed immediately and ranks easily, I added a page for my service in my local area and went straight to position 5 in Google however old existing content wont move, I tracked 150 keywords only 4 are top 75

Don't know what else to do  so any advice would be much appreciated

PS site is around 17k pages

          Paul

Thanks for clearing that up.  It has been years since we changed our domain etc... and our wait was about 6 weeks rather than months, but so much has changed...  anyway, it looks as though you have set everything up correctly, sorry I couldn't be any help.  Good luck my friend - I would say 'build links etc...' while you wait but I have no doubt you already know what to do 🙂  Cheers

              Thanks for the replys

              @Billy

What i mean by old content wont move, all we have done is change the URL name of the site the new site is a mirror of the old site with all the correct 301's going to the mirrored pages,

Although  all the new site is indexed fully, there are around 100 pages of the old site left no important pages just some really deep linked pages which is normal i think.

My ranking is not ok, it was on the old domain but not the new i am down at least 85% compared to site now and the site as it was.

              @CleverPhD

Thanks for the feedback 6 month wait is not what i was hoping but if that what it takes then so be it i just needed a figure to work too, hopefully the site will start to rank again soon

One of our sites it took about 6 months before things got back to "normal" in the SERPs.   As far as how long to leave the 301s.  I would say indefinitely.    There are links from other sites with old URLs that we still get traffic from and want to make sure we get that referral traffic.

Having the old 301s in place I do not think hurts anything as over time they will be used less and less.  You could also look at your server logs and determine that some 301s are not used anymore and then turn them off.

It just always surprises me when I see Google looking for old pages that we have 301ed for over a year and so I leave them in place.

                Good luck.

"however old existing content wont move"

You mean that the old page is still indexed?  Sorry I am just trying to understand the problem better.  First of all, thank you for the link to your old question.  Your URLs were there so I took the liberty of checking them and you are, of course, correct.  All 301s appear perfect.  Also, you state that your ranking is ok?  Is that correct?  Again, I apologize, I'm just trying to get the full picture.  In one paragraph you state that you can't find yourself if you search your content but in another you say that you are indexed and rank easily.

Unsolved Temporary redirect from 302 to 301 for PNG File?

302 temporary riderect 301 http status image issue

                    #302HTTP #temporaryredirect
Hi everyone, Recently I have faced a crawl issue with my media images on website. For example this page url https://intreface.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Horion-screen-side-2.png has 302 HTTP Status and the recommendation is to change it 301. I have read the article on temporary redirections here:
                    https://a-moz.groupbuyseo.org/learn/seo/redirection?_ga=2.45324708.1293586627.1702571936-916254120.1702571936
but its not written here how to redirect in my HTML 1 image url not the landing page.
                    Screenshot 2023-12-15 at 11.02.40.png
I have messaged to MOZ Support but they recommended to go for the MOZ Community!
Screenshot 2023-12-15 at 11.06.02.png Could you assist me wit this issue please? I can reach HTTML of the necessary page and change what I need for permanent redirection but firstly I need to understand how to do that correctly.

                    301 redirect syntax for htaccess

I'm working on some htaccess redirects for a few stray pages and have come across a few different varieties of 301s that are confusing me a bit....Most sources suggest: Redirect 301 /pageA.html http://www.site.com/pageB.html or using some combination of: RewriteRule + RewriteCond + RegEx I've also found examples of: RedirectPermanent /pageA.html http://www.site.com/pageB.html I'm confused because our current htaccess file has quite a few (working) redirects that look like this: Redirect permanent /pageA.html http://www.site.com/pageB.html This syntax seems to work, but I'm yet to find another Redirect permanent in the wild, only examples of Redirect 301 or RedirectPermanent Is there any difference between these? Would I benefit at all from replacing Redirect permanent with Redirect 301?

301 redirects delay in picking up

Hi I have been involved in the redesign/development of a website which has up until now had a lot of international traffic.  On day of migration I uploaded all the 301 redirects to the website (wordpress) using Simple 301 redirect plugin.  I tested a number of them and they appeared to be working. I also submitted the new sitemaps to Search Console. Since migration international traffic - particularly from countries such as india, Phillipines, Sri Lanka etc have significantly dropped off whereas the local traffic and some of the international traffic such as USA has remained fairly consistent.  Looking at Analytics and entrances recently it appears as though search results are/were showing a number of pages with 404's (one in particular which received significant traffic and for which I had created a 301 redirection) - I have checked this page using the old url and it re-directs correctly for me and today asked a colleague in India to also check - he is getting the redirection fine.  Does Google.in take a significantly longer time to pick these up in search results? Or am I missing something?

301 redirect: canonical or non canonical?

Hi, Newbie alert! I need to set up 301 redirects for changed URLs on a database driven site that is to be redeveloped shortly. The current site uses canonical header tags. The new site will also use canonical tags. Should the 301 redirects map the canonical URL on the old site to the corresponding canonical for the new design . . . or should they map the non canonical database URLs old and new? Given that the purpose of canonicals is to indicate our preferred URL, then my guess is that's what I should use. However, how can I be sure that Google (for example) has indexed the canonical in every case? Thx in anticipation.

Changing title tags, do we need 301 redirects

I found many duplicate title tags and I'm in the process of changing it  Do I need 301 redirects in place when I switch it? I am only changing the title tag. Also, we are switching over to a new site very soon, I am worried that we might be using too many 301 redirect "hops" because we are doing a lot of optimization as well. (video from matt cutts describing 301 redirects and hops: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA. Does anyone have any experience in doing too many redirect hops that it affected your rankings? Any good ideas to avoid this?

301 redirects & merging two sites into one

We have a client that has two sites that rank well for different searches in their market. The main pages ranking are things like advice articles and news pieces. For various reasons, they just want one site. I believe they need to duplicate the content from the outgoing site and place it on the main site, with a 301 redirect from each old page to each new one. What happens when they eventually want to redirect the entire domain? Would these smaller, internal redirects become obsolete, therefore removing any link value they once had? I am not sure how this works or if there is a best practice way to do this. Thanks Gareth

How long should I keep 301 redirects?

I have modified a the URL structure of a whole section of a website and used mod_rewrite 301 redirect to match the new structure. Now that was around 3 months ago and I was wondering how long should I keep this redirect for? As it is a new website I am quite sure that there are no links around with the old URL structure but still I can see the google bot trying from time to time to access the old URL structure. Shouldn't the google bot learn from this 301 redirect and not go anymore for the old URL?

Delete old site but redirect domain to a new domain and site

I just have a quick query and I have a feeling about what the answer is so just wanted to see what you guys thought... Basically I am working on a client site. This client has a few other websites that are divisions of their company. However these divisions/websites are no longer used. They are wanting to delete the websites but redirect the domains to their name main website. They believe this will pass on SEO benefits as these old division sites are old and have a good PR and history. I'm unsure for DEFINITE, which way is correct?
