We're about to launch an AdWords campaign targeting users who are searching for hand-crafted furniture. The website we're sending users to has a large inventory of furniture, and all if it is hand-crafted. But there currently is no page on the site specifically communicating that all the furniture on the site is hand-crafted.

So, rather than dump the user right into browsing the inventory, we want to put an intermediate step in place to say, in essence, "Hey, welcome, yes, we have lots of handcrafted furniture. In fact, all of it is hand-crafted. Here, have a look around."

The art director on the project is suggesting that a modal pop-up would be perfect for this scenario. It would greet the user, who could then dismiss the pop-up and move into the site.

I have two concerns about using a modal, though:

          1. Does a modal violate Google's policy against pop-ups that open new windows?
          2. Assuming we trigger the modal using Javascript, will AdsBot have any trouble crawling the content of the modal, such that it could hurt the landing page component of our quality score?

            Ah, that makes sense.

In that case, best practice is to make landing pages specific to your AdWords campaigns. I know that seems like a lot more work than just adding a modal pop up, but hopefully you can get your developer to make you a template and then you can easily make a number of very similar pages with different messaging. That extra expense to make a landing page will be worthwhile, since there's no chance that Google will have a problem with it, so your ads won't get disapproved, and visitors generally expect a landing page tailored to their ad anyway.

            Good luck!

Thank you for sharing the real-world results you've had using overlays and pop-ups. Good points.

                Thank you, Kristina. Wise advice.

For what it's worth, the complicating factor about why we don't necessarily just put the message about "handcrafted" prominently on the inventory page is that we have multiple possible messages to emphasize. I many cases the message that the store is at a convenient, nearby location is most important, the fact that the furniture is customizable is second, and then the handcrafted aspect is maybe third or fourth. With this specific segment of AdWords traffic, by contrast, we want to clearly emphasize the "handcrafted" message most prominently.

                  Hi Ydop,

You might be able to get away with a modal pop up without AdWords noticing, but I think that it does violate Google's policy in spirit, since Google says "Google does not allow pop ups of any kind when entering or leaving your landing page." (Bolding for emphasis) Even though they're talking about separate windows, the experience is the same for the user. In fact, sometimes it's more frustrating, since modal pop ups are often harder to close.

That said, your intent is fine, I just think that you need to use a different solution to introduce your company on your inventory page. You said that you want to use a pop up to tell AdWords visitors that your inventory page is full of hand-crafted furniture, but why can't you include that message at the top of the page? Especially if it's a core value of your business, visitors who started on the homepage won't mind being reminded about the quality of your work. And it will help visitors who land on that inventory page through search or referral links as well as AdWords visitors.

As a consultant, I push my clients to make every page include enough information that it can be a landing page. With Google trying to place visitors on the most specifically relevant page possible, and referring links out of your control, you never know where visitors will start on your website. Don't assume that visitors will start on your homepage, or that will begin their journey through your site understanding your business.

                  Good luck!

                  Kristina

Our personal experience with overlays/popups have been that they create massive bounce rates and people run because these methods have been associated in the minds of consumers as spam.

Think about the customer, will a pop up enhance their experience with the site? If not why do it? Also from a organic perspective having "handcrafted" in your text might be a benefit?!

How to track in Google Analytics 2 different subdomains (one for website, the other for PPC landing pages)

Hello Mozers! I have a website with organic visits/goals on www.site.com and a few AdWords Campaign landing pages on lp.site.com whose goals are tracked with both adwords conversion monitoring AND analytics (not imported from analytics into Adword). The landing pages of the campaign have nothing to do with the web site (different cms, they don't link each other, totally isolated) and viceversa. Given that, what would it be the best practice to configure Google Analytics to track the website (www.site.com) AND a PPC campagin (lp.site.com)? I have been told to set up different views of the same property, but do I really need that? Please let me know what are you thinking. Thank you very much. DoMiSoL Rossini

Adwords negative keywords / keyword lists conflicting?

Does any of you had any experience on large 5k+ shared negative keyword lists impacting normal campaign negative keywords in Adwords even if they are not selected on these campaigns? And a second question; does anyone know how selected negative keyword lists can be removed from a campaign? I seem to be able to add them but not to remove them... Cheers!

Near-duplicate content for landing pages - use noindex?

We want to create 5-10 near-duplicates of our homepage to use as landing pages – nearly all same text, but some different images.  We want to make sure Google doesn't ding us for duplicate content.  Is the best way to do that to tag each of these pages with "noindex"?

                      AdWords Sitelinks Disapproved

                      Hello,
I cannot find a justifiable reason as to why Google AdWords has disapproved my sitelinks. 1. My link text is descriptive of each page. For instance, I use the link text "Merchant Accounts" for the URL http://www.instabill.com/services/merchant-accounts/ 2. I have four extensions within one campaign. Each have 5 sitelinks with all the same link text and destination URLs. However, only two of the "Merchant Accounts" sitelinks were disapproved from two out of the four extensions. Two "High Risk Accounts" linking to our High Risk Merchant Accounts page were disapproved out of my four extensions, one "Industries We Serve" to our eCommerce Industries page was disapproved, and one "Offshore Accounts to our Offshore Merchant Accounts page was disapproved. Why are some disapproved and not all? 3. I use Daddy Analytics to generate my destination URLs for tracking purposes, but I do not see this as being an issue since the URL still begins with the URL in bullet point 1. After reading a few threads within the AdWords community and reading the AdWords Sitelinks Guidelines, I feel as if I have followed the guidelines. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

How Can I Target Certain Countries in Google AdWords without Excluding Other Countries?

So, here is the situation: Our company works with merchants worldwide (with the exception of those who live in excluded high-risk countries--mostly in Africa), but most of our Google AdWords leads come from Indian merchants. My CEO wants our campaigns to convert leads from other countries (i.e., the UK, Germany, US, Canada, Australia, etc.), but I have no idea how to do that without excluding India. However, my CEO does not want to exclude India from our AdWords campaigns as the leads are profitable. We simply want more diversity with out leads in terms of geographic location. I am sure there are resources on the Web about how to do this, but I am not an Adwords expert and am unsure of what phrases to search to find the answers. Direct advice or helpful links are much appreciated. Regards,
                      Meghan

Adwords: Brand ads appear bottom of SERPs

Hello, I'm running a sale promotion on a brand only Adwords campaign (I have the only account with trademark authorization) and have noticed that my ads are appearing at the bottom of the first page on Google. This happened last week so I split the campaign into three Adgroups and that fixed the problem but today I'm running brand only and there is no way to separate them. CPC has also increased dramatically. Normally it's less than 10 cents and now it's sitting at between $2-$4. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas/advice on how to stop this happening? It's playing havoc with my CTR and conversions. Much thanks,
                      Davinia
