          Should I park a domain or Redirect? And what is the best way?

          I need to switch our domain name. I currently have all of our domains redirecting to our main website. I have set up there own hosting in our cpanel account so I could redirect them to our main domain. Was this too many steps?

          I tried putting all of our domains in our main domains, .htaccess file, and redirected them to our main website, but they did not work. So that is why I set up there own cpanel accounts. Now they work fine. However, my hosting company told me that I could just park the domain on our current domains account.  If I can redirect all of these domain in one place, that would be great.

          I thought that a parked domain is considered duplicate websites, as both urls work, displaying the entire website with both urls.

          So Would I have to re upload our entire website to the account that I want as our main domain? Or is there another way of going about doing this?

            Not, if an "Add on" domain resolves that typing the added-on domain, you finally are redirected to your primary domain, and if that redirection is 301 (permanent).

            If the domains you want to redirect are totally new, that means that probably they do not have any history and therefore any backlink and link juice to gift to your primary one. In this case, also a 302 redirection (a not permanent) is not SEO harmful.

              My hosting company suggested I switch my primary domain and then use the ADD ON DOMAIN and redirect the old domains. Are ADD ON DOMAINs Bad for seo?

                No, you can choose:

                • to have them parked and not redirected to your main domain name;
                • to have them parked and redirect them to your domain name

                To have a domain parked is technically when that domain is alive but not having a real site related. But it still has to have an html page.

                That is why that parked domains and not parked domains has to allocated in different spaces. If not you would have them showing your main site, as a parking page (which is not anything else than an index.html) cannot coexist with the index of your site.

                If the parked domains are allocated in separate spaces in your hosting (/domain-parked-1, /domain-parked-2...), then you can choose if redirect them or not.

                  So, should I not park them and redirect them? Or parke them and then redirect them?

                  I tried the code to redirect in our main site now, with a domain that is not parked, nor hosted, and it did not work.

                    Hi!

                    In order to not have your "parked" domains being a duplicate of your main site, you have three options:

                    1. assign to everty domain its own space separated from the others. In that space would have to be present a parking page, better if personalized in order to be unique;

                    2. redirect them 301 (permanent redirect) via .htaccess, You say it does not work this way, but I recommend you to verify if you are writing correctly the command in the .htaccess file. Here you can find how to do it correctly: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-web-developers-seo-cheat-sheet

                    3. use the option the hoster offers... even though it could be a 302 not permanent redirect.

                    The extreme solution is to transfer the domains you are not going to use in another hosting, the cheapest.

                      Any risks involved in removing a sub-domain from search index or completely taking down? Ranking impact?

                      Hi all, One of our sub-domains has thousands of indexed pages but traffic is very less and irrelevant. There are links between this sub-domain to other sub domains of ours. We are planning  to take this subdomain completely. What happens if so? Google responds for this with a ranking change? Thanks

                      Spanish website indexed in English, redirect to spanish or english version if i do a new website design?

                      Hi MOZ users, i have this problem. We have a website in Spanish Language but Google crawls it on English (it is not important the reasons). We re made the entire website and now we are planning the move. The new website will have different language versions, english, spanish and portuguese. Somebody tells me that we have to redirect the old urls (crawled on english) to the new english versions, not to the spanish (the real language of the firsts). Example: URL1 Language: Spanish - Crawled on English --> redirect to Language English version. the other option will be redirect to the spanish new version, which the visitor is waiting to find. URL1 Language: Spanish - Crawled on English --> redirect to Language Spanish version. What do you think? Which is the better option?

                      Multi region stores, one domain

                      hi all Wondering if I could get some options on the pros and cons of using one domain for two stores targeting different regions. My website is a fashion retailer, targted at the female market. In addition to the stores the site has a number of blogs, articles etc on. At present we have a co.uk domain and a .com which targets the US market. The trouble with this split approach is having seo two sites at once, in addition to adding content to two sites etc. we are considering combining the stores into one domain and the having the U.S. Shop at /us and UK store at /UK - in wmt we will specifiy the directories as targeted to a specific location, the hotel language etc will be showing UK and U.S. English to further help geo targeting. we are thinking that, in theory, managing just one site will mean it's easier to build the authority and brand name. Pretty much all of the blog and article content is non region specific so it is relevant to both markets, it will also reduce the need to generate unique content for two sites at once. Is there any major downside to merging the sites like this. At present the UK site is da 4 and U.S. site da 0 - they are both pretty new and one of the problems we have at the moment is building up two sites at once. i welcome any opinions. thanks. Carl

                      301 Redirect all pictures when moving to a new site?

                      We have 30,000 pictures on our site. Moz will return 404's on some occasionally, but Google seems to ignore those. Should I 301 redirect all those images when we move to a new site lay-out? Appreciate your views!

                      Is there a way to redirect URLs with a hash-bang (#!) format?

                      Hi Moz, I'm trying to redirect www.site.com/locations/#!city to www.site.com/locations/city. This seems difficult because anything after the hash character in the URL does not make it to the server thus cannot be parsed for rewriting. Is there an SEO friendly way to implement these redirects? Thanks for reading!

                      Best SEO practice - Umbrella brand with several domains

                      Hi, we have several blogs and comparison sites on specific topics. All the domains rank on top positions in very competitive niche markets. We think that we can get more profit out of the domains when we put them under an umbrella brand. Customers that visit domain A can then also find products easily on domain B.  We see this for example on health.com, with several brands in the top. To maintain or improve our rankings i'm looking for specific information for the link structure. For example, is it better to have the 'about us'/rel=author on each domain, with contributors on that specific domain or is it better to have them all in the (umbrella) brand domain. At the moment we have the structure like this: domainA.com, domainA.com/blog, domainA.com/about-us  and  domainB.com, domainB.com/blog, domainB.com/about-us. I think to maintain the rankings it is best to keep specific content (like blog/ about us) on the domain. So is it the best to just do side wide links with a logo (like health.com) and what about hosting? We work with wordpress, so all domains will be hosted on one ip? when we use the multiple site option of WP? All information on this topic is more than welcome 🙂

                      Is it necessary to redirect every Error page (404 or 500) found?

                      If I have Hundreds of pages with 404 and 500 erros should set up 301 redirects for all of them?  Some of the pages have external links, some don't.
