          Seeking subdomain usage and related SEO advice...  I'd like to use multiple subdomains for multiple landing pages all with content related to the main root domain. Why?...Cost: so I only have to register one domain. One root domain for better 'branding'. Multiple subdomains that each focus on one specific reason & set of specific keywords people would search a solution to their reason to hire us (or our competition).

            Thanks very much Jane! I think subdirectories are how I'll go.

            Effective; organic SEO is HUGE for my initial online success. We market only with direct mail so far. But mailing lists don't address human situations ie: people who've inherited a property AND with it a 2nd mortgage payment AND they're stressed because they can't afford the 2nd payment AND their realtor hasn't sold the inherited property.One last question for all-

            With effective landing page SEO & SERP being my primary goal; is the web URL structure term "siloing" familiar to anyone and applicable / adaptable to my multiple landing pages? (I found the term  & explanation here: http://www.bruceclay.com/seo/silo.htm) Or is some other method more advisible in order to "pool" my subdirectories for better SEO in SERP? Peter

              Hi Peter,

              In some ways, subdirectories seems even more sensible when you're dealing with single landing pages, as they'll work together somewhat to look like a fuller site from Google's perspective, rather than just a collection of subdomains happening to exist on the same domain.

                Hello again; after looking at your feedback; then a fresh look at our marketing needs & budget...  After viewing each of our competitors sites with keyword 'semi'-stuffing, empty tags, horrible SEO structure, very light traffic & way too much info.... So now we're thinking that we do not need a main site; AND JUST HAVE multiple landing pages each very focused on a single financial or situational motivation causing a property owner to want to sell quickly & we'll explain how we are an alternative than a realtor. Does using subdirectories still seem best for only having single page landing pages? Does anyone have a few informative links regarding setting up & use of subdirectories? Thx, Peter

                  Hi Peter,

                  I understand that the platform only allows for subdomains. From a purely SEO point of view, subfolders or pages are preferable to subdomains because authority does not appear to pass between a parent domain and its subdomains in the same way as it does between subfolders and parent domains. If your landing page sites are only one pagers, they may be seen as quite thin as well.

                  However, there is no reason why you can't build quality content like this - it just may take more link building to establish the authority for the subdomains than it would for pages on the same site. You will need to ensure that as much unique content as possible is placed on the landing pages to increase their 'worth' in Google's eyes, given that they are separate from each other on subdomains.

                    Thanks for both responses. Alan- These landing pages would be single page sites. Thompson Paul- The reason I thought sub-domains IS TO SAVE $ with Lander ($ per # domains) and the cost of registering many domains.

                    Here's the specifics of my search.. The targeted property owner mailing lists are based on data: mortgage, taxes & assessors. They give NO CLUES as to human condition that we look for when our mailers get responses.We have a list of motivations (or reasons for distress to sell their house) are financial or circumstantial: divorce, inheritance, job loss, job transfer, can't sell house, bankrupt, tenant trashed apartment, etc. These motivations are not apparent, obviously, on a mailing list. We want to learn the best way to specifically find people, who own their property in CT, who aren't searching to sell - but are looking for solution to divorce or whatever NOT realizing a cash buyer (us) is a real & UPRIGHT solution. ** We have a list of motivations that we want to define into what phrases people ask in Google to find answers; then what keywords get found for those queries.. and limit it the best we can to CT.** Thanks, Peter

                    PS:Like Squarespace is drag and drop creation for websites plus hosting, ecommerce & stats; so is www.landerapp.com to landing pages -- they offer customize-able templates that are SEO optimize-able, have great stats & offer drag & drop opt-in forms to integrate into my email service. Comments/advice?

                      Fully agree with Alan - subdomains would be a major waste of effort and SEO value.

                      Are you thinking you want subdomains perhaps so you can track them differently? There are many ways to do the necessary tracking with pages in subdirectories of the main site, so it's not necessary to use subdomains for this reason either.

                      Unless there's something missing in what you need here, integrating the landing pages into the main site is the vastly superior solution here.

                      Can you give us an idea what it is about subdomains that you feel you need?

                        Unless those subdomains for single page sites, may look spammy to google. you can put those pages in your own site, there is nothing to gain using subdomains

                          Page rank and menus

                          Hi, My client has a large website and has a navigation with main categories. However, they also have a hamburger type navigation in the top right. If you click it it opens to a massive menu with every category and page visible. Do you know if having a navigation like this bleeds page rank? So if all deep pages are visible from the hamburger navigation this means that page rank is not being conserved to the main categories. If you click a main category in the main navigation (not the hamburger) you can see the sub pages. I think this is the right structure but the client has installed this huge menu to make it easier for people to see what there is. From a technical SEO  is this not bad?

                          Which of these examples are doorway pages?

                          Hi there, I am soon to launch a new platform/directory website, however, have a concern over doorway pages. I have read many articles on the difference between Doorway and Landing pages and do have a good understanding, however, am still very anxious that what I intend to do will be risking Google penalties. I have looked at other directory/platform websites and have noticed that a lot of them are still using doorway pages and are not getting penalised. So I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind kindly letting me know their opinion on which of the following examples are doorway pages and which are not so I can better understand what I can and cannot do? Example 1: When I Google 'piano lessons new york' and 'trumpet lessons new york' I get the following 'landing pages' in search: https://takelessons.com/new-york/piano-lessons https://takelessons.com/new-york/trumpet-lessons To me, the above pages are definitely doorway pages as they are very similar with content and text and are simply an intermediary step between the Google search and their listings pages for piano/trumpet teachers in New York. Is this correct? Example 2: When I Google 'piano lessons Sydney' I get presented with the following web page in search: http://www.musicteacher.com.au/directory/sydney-nsw/lessons/piano/ I would think that this is NOT a doorway page as the user has been taken directly to the search results page in the directory and the page doesn't seem to have been set up for the sole purpose of listing in search results for 'Piano Lessons in Sydney'. Example 3: When I Google 'pet minding Sydney' I get presented with the following two pages in search: https://www.madpaws.com.au/petsitters/Sydney-New-South-Wales?type=night&service=1&from=0&to=99&city=Sydney&state=New-South-Wales https://www.pawshake.com.au/petsitters/Sydney%252C%2520New%2520South%2520Wales%252C%2520Australia Like Example 2, I don't think these pages would be classified as doorway pages as they too direct to the search results page in the site directory instead of an intermediary page.                           Multiple Landing Pages and Backlinks

                          I have a client that does website contract work for about 50 governmental county websites.  The client has the ability to add a link back in the footer of each of these websites.  I am wanting my client to get backlink juice for a different key phrase from each of the 50 agencies (basically just my keyphrase with the different county name in it).  I also want a different landing page to rank for each term.  The 50 different landing pages would be a bit like location pages for local search.  Each one targets a different county.  However, I do not have a lot of unique content for each page.  Basically each page would follow the same format (but reference a different county name, and 10 different links from each county website). Is this a good SEO back link strategy?  Do I need more unique content for each landing page in order to prevent duplicate content flags?

                          Using Canonical URL to poin to an external page

                          I was wondering if I can use a canonical URL that points to a page residing on external site? So a page like:
                          www.site1.com/whatever.html will have a canonical link in its header to www.site2.com/whatever.html. Thanks.

                          How long takes to a page show up in Google results after removing noindex from a page?

                          Hi folks, A client of mine created a new page and used meta robots noindex to not show the page while they are not ready to launch it. The problem is that somehow Google "crawled" the page and now, after removing the meta robots noindex, the page does not show up in the results. We've tried to crawl it using Fetch as Googlebot, and then submit it using the button that appears. We've included the page in sitemap.xml and also used the old Google submit new page URL https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url Does anyone know how long will it take for Google to show the page AFTER removing meta robots noindex from the page? Any reliable references of the statement? I did not find any Google video/post  about this. I know that in some days it will appear but I'd like to have a good reference for the future. Thanks.

                          Effect of Removing Footer Links In all Pages Except Home Page

                          Dear MOZ Community: In an effort to improve the user interface of our business website (a New York CIty commercial real estate agency) my designer eliminated a standardized footer containing links to about 20 pages. The new design maintains this footer on the home page, but all other pages (about 600 eliminate the footer). The new design does a very good job eliminating non essential items. Most of the changes remove or reduce the size of unnecessary design elements. The footer removal is the only change really effect the link structure. The new design is not launched yet. Hoping to receive some good advice from the MOZ community before proceeding My concern is that removing these links could have an adverse or unpredictable effect on ranking. Last Summer we launched a completely redesigned version of the site and our ranking collapsed for 3 months. However unlike the previous upgrade this modifications does not URL names, tags, text or any major element. Only major change is the footer removal. Some of the footer pages provide good (not critical) info for visitors. Note the footer will still appear on the home page but will be removed on the interior pages. Are we risking any detrimental ranking effect by removing this footer? Can we compensate by adding text links to these pages if the links from the footer are removed? Seems irregular to have a home page footer but no footer on the other pages. Are we inviting any downgrade, penalty, adverse SEO effect by implementing this? I very much like the new design but do not want to risk a fall in rank and traffic. Thanks for your input!!!

                          Can too many "noindex" pages compared to "index" pages be a problem?

                          Hello, I have a question for you: our website virtualsheetmusic.com includes thousands of product pages, and due to Panda penalties in the past, we have no-indexed most of the product pages hoping in a sort of recovery (not yet seen though!). So, currently we have about 4,000 "index" page compared to about 80,000 "noindex" pages. Now, we plan to add additional 100,000 new product pages from a new publisher to offer our customers more music choice, and these new pages will still be marked as "noindex, follow". At the end of the integration process, we will end up having something like 180,000 "noindex, follow" pages compared to about 4,000 "index, follow" pages. Here is my question: can this huge discrepancy between 180,000 "noindex" pages and 4,000 "index" pages be a problem? Can this kind of scenario have or cause any negative effect on our current natural SEs profile? or is this something that doesn't actually matter? Any thoughts on this issue are very welcome.                           Migrating online store to subdomain using shopify and effects on seo and energy down the road for seo

                          I'm looking for some clarity... Looking at using Shopify for an existing online store that we have to migrate. Setting up the store with shopify means we will be using a subdomain such as shop.mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/shop. The following are points to consider when responding The client currently has an online store, however it's a proprietary shopping store and CMS that has since gone defunct and they need to migrate to an alternative in order to survive online against new CMS systems that allow the site and its content to be better optimized. There is a lot of existing SEO done on the current site that we don't want to loose PR on. There is roughly 2000 products Client has a fixed budget, dealing with checkout issues, custom work and various other "bugs" seems to be easier controlled with Shopify...thus budget can be used more on content/strategy and migration We want to run the main site in Wordpress and are wanting to use Shopify since it supports a gateway, has great features and seems like it would allow us to get more bang for the buck and can focus more on the main site and content strategy and drive traffic to the subdomain store if needed Or main concern is the effort of migrating 2000+ products to shopify and the traffic and PR it gives the current site will have a negative effect on the main domain itself. Should we really be considering this path? The domain is diveidc.com One main benefit to the subdomain is the ability to clearly segment products from the service portion of the site in the analytics and focus 2 clear strategies and track it in a very defined manner. We're really on the fence with this...any thoughts are welcome.
