          Hi MOZers,

We are looking for some advice on whether to have a single TLD(.com) or 2 separate domains (.ca) & (.com)

Our website will have different products & pricing for each of US users(.com) and Canada users(.ca).

Since, we are targeting different countries & user groups with each domain - we are not concerned about "duplicate content".

So, does it make more sense to have a single domain for compounding our content marketing efforts?

          Or,

Will it be more beneficial to have seperate domains for the geo-targeting benefits on Google.CA & Google.COM?

Looking forward to some great suggestions.

There is a ton of passion about this topic online, and often between marketing departments in countries.

In a perfect world, for Google, you would have local content (unique by country), local domains (.ca and .com), local addresses and phone numbers, and the physical servers would be in the country.

This has to be balanced against multiple investments, management of the two, existing rank of a domain or domains, plans for multilingual in both countries (spanish, french), expansion to new countries, etc. If you already have a .com domain (or .ca) which is well performing in both countries, don't split it. Build a sub off of it (.com/en-ca, .com/en-us, etc.). Building off of one domain, with folders beneath it, provide nice flexibility for management, and can reduce costs. Additionally, you can target the content well. You may, and emphasize may, lose some SEO value, but this can only be quantified at your business level versus effort. Mozilla shows a nice example of one site with languages per folder. (No you are likely not Mozilla, but you get the point).

Your best efforts are to focus on content, solid architecture, great conversion rates, and ensuring localization of targeting and linking. These will have larger impact than folder v. TLD. (IMHO).

I think this partially depends on resources you'll be able to expend on one vs two sites as gains made on one would have to be repeated in some way with the other site. Dev work on a single domain with dual pricing could be a bit more complicated than two separate domains with one singular price and fulfillment system.

Do you have any data on what customers of yours might prefer? I.e, would having the '.ca' help push conversions?

If the marketing plan is very much content marketing focused, you'll probably be better served by a single domain, but that could change depending on how regionally focused the sites are.

SEO Best Practice for Managing a Businesses NAP with Multiple Addresses

I have a client with multiple business addresses - 3 across 3 states, from an SEO perspective what would be the best approach for displaying a NAP on the website? So far I've read that its best: to get 3 GMB account to point to 3 location pages & use a local phone number as opposed to a 1300 number. Display all 3 locations in the footer, run of site

Can I use Schema zip code markup that includes multiple zip codes but no actual address?

The company doesn't have physical locations but offers services in multiple cities and states across the US. We want to develop a better hyperlocal SEO strategy and implement schema but the only address information available is zip codes, names of cities and state. Can we omit the actual street address in the formatting but add multiple zipcodes?

Service Area Location Pages vs. User Experience

I'm familiar with the SAB best practices outlined here. Here's my issue: Doing local landing pages as described here might not be ideal from a user experience point of view. Having a "Cities We Serve" or "Service Areas" link in the main navigation isn't necessarily valuable to the user when the city-specific landing pages are all places within a 15-mile radius of the SAB's headquarters. It would just look like the company did it for SEO. It wouldn't look natural. Seriously, it feels like best practices are totally at odds with user experience here. If I absolutely must create location pages for 10 or so municipalities within my client's service area, I'd rather NOT put the service areas as a primary navigation item. It is not useful to the user. Anyone who sees that the company provides services in the [name of city] metropolitan area will already understand that the company can service their town that is 5 miles away. It is self-evident. For example**, who would wonder whether a plumbing company with a Los Angeles address also services Beverly Hills?** It's just... silly. But the Moz guide says I've got to do those location pages! And that I've got to put them high up in the navigation! This is a problem because we've got to do local SEO, but we also have to provide an ideal experience. Thoughts?

I have a client in Australia that is going to set up a website that is in Chinese to service their Asian customer base (Indonesia, Singapore, HK, China). What domain should they use?

They're website is hosted on a .com.au domain. Should they host their Chinese language pages under their current domain (.com.au) using a subdirectory (i.e. /asia) or should they use another separate domain that they own that is a regular .com? Or does it really not matter?

Is it worth it having different cities in your footer, each with a separate page?

I have been looking at the website of local web design companies and every single one in my area has a footer with links to a separate page for that local city. This seems like a bad idea to me, but everyone in the local pack has it. Does it work?

Sub-Domain Google Search Nested under main Domain?

Hello, I have a strange issue that I have not come across before:My subdomain is: michigan.dogdaycare.com. Some of the Keyword searches show our subdomain being nested under the main domain for Google searches instead of being indexed individually. Example search term: Dogtopia Bloomfield https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=dogtopia+bloomfield -This will show two subdomain links nested under the main domain Example search term: Dogtopia Birmingham https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=dogtopia+birmingham -This shows the subdomain showing correctly in searches and not nested. Any idea as to how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Reducing traffic from a particular country

We are having a quality/ relevance issue with some of our traffic. One of the problems is that we are ranking well in certain foreign countries, which is driving irrelevant traffic to our site (as we only really cater for UK residents). Is there any way to suppress our overseas Google rankings whilst retaining good performance in the UK? Thanks.

Same blog, multiple languages. Got SEO concerns.

Hi, My company runs a small blog in swedish. Most of the visitors are our customers/prospects. We will write about generic concepts regarding our business and the occasional company news story. However, I have quite a few ideas for articles that could be interesting to a lot of people, and I'm tempted to write those in english for better exposure. I would love it if that exposure could boost my companies authority. How should I go on about this? Can I somehow tell search engines that a certain part or page of the site is in another language? Should I translate our entire site to english and post the english post in a separate blog feed? Any insight is welcome. Thanks in advance!
