You've got some work to do, @ Dogara. It's essential to realise that just installing SEO plugins doesn't finish the job - they must also be carefully configured. And then the pages themselves must be optimised using the information the SEO plugin provides. Think of the plugin as a tool to make the optimisations easier, not one that will do all the work for you. Here's the task list I would tackle if I were you:

First things first - make certain you have a solid current backup of your website that you know how to recover if things should go sideways.

You currently have two competing SEO plugins active - definitely not recommended. You have both Squirrly and Yoast Premium. Since Squirrly doesn't appear to be configured at all, it should be removed. (This is assuming you haven't' done any customisation work with Squirrly - as it appears to me from a quick scan through your pages, But I didn't' do an exhaustive check, so if you've done customisations in this plugin, they may need to be exported, then imported into Yoast.)

Your Yoast Premium hasn't been updated in a full year - get it updated both for security and functionality. (And get all themes and other plugins updated too if they're behind - this is the biggest thing you can do for your website's security. Did I mention you need to have a solid backup first? 🙂 )

Fix your page layout templates - they are duplicating the page title and featured image.

Set up configuration of Yoast settings, configure the defaults for page:

              • Turn off the meta keywords functionality (no longer used)

              • Decide what you wish to do with all your redundant archive types that are creating a huge amount of duplicate content and bloat. My recommendations:

              • Since your site only appears to have one author, disable author archives.

              • turn off date-based archives. You're not using them anywhere that I can see, and few people are likely to search by date on the site

              • no-index the tag archives. These are straight-up massive duplicate content on your site as they are just lists of posts that are also listed elsewhere, like your categories.

              • add a couple of paragraphs of quality introductory text on each of your category pages (needs WordPress customisation to do this depending on your theme - may be doable with a plugin.) The alternative to this is to no-index your categories as well, but for a site like yours, this probably isn't recommended, since those categories are used as your primary header navigation.

              • NOTE! These recommendations are based on assumptions about how visitors use the site. If you have business reasons for keeping some of these archives, the decisions may be different!

              • write solid custom meta descriptions for your categories (assuming you are going to keep them indexed.) Currently, it is these category pages having no meta descriptions that is giving you that high error total in the Moz crawl. Do note that when you fix the meta descriptions, you may start seeing a large number of "duplicate meta description" errors listed in a new Moz crawl. This is because you have a large number of paginated pages for each category, and each will have the same meta description as the main page. This is not an issue, even though Moz may flag it, since the pages have proper pagination code in place already (re-next and rel-prev in headers). Note that Google has just this week changed the number of characters allowed in meta descriptions to be much longer - tools may not have caught up to this change yet.)

              • while you're editing the category meta description, take the opportunity to write better SEO page titles for each of them as well. They're edited in the same place as the meta descriptions in Yoast, so easy to do at the same time.

              • get the template for your homepage adjusted to include proper rel-next and rel=prev meta tags in the header so that its pagination is handled properly.

              • turn off JetPack's XML sitemap functionality and turn on the built-in sitemap tool in Yoast. You'll want to make certain only the appropriate sections of the site are in the sitemap (e.g. Any post types/taxonomies you've no-indexed, should be marked to exclude from the sitemap - like tags, author archives etc etc. You'll also need to resubmit a new sitemap address to your Google Search Console - make sure it's set up for the HTTPS address and submit the sitemap address https://hipmack.co/sitemap_index.xml

              • the "URLs too long" warning is somewhat arbitrary, but make certain you are rewriting the URLs of your new posts when you create them if they are too long (more than 4 or 5 words) I wouldn't' bother going back to change the old ones at this stage.

              • you are currently using an HTTPS Redirection plugin to manage the internal files of the site after your HTTPS migration. Would strongly recommend using a Search & Replace plugin for your database to properly rewrite these so you don't have a large number of internal redirects. Better for speed and more reliable.

              • Moz will tell you which page titles are too long and you can go into Yoast for each related page/post and rewrite them. Note that Google will still index a "too long" title, it'll just lose the end of the title when displaying it on search results pages. (So, for example, if it's just the website name getting cut off at the end, it'snot a big deal. This is also a good time to optimise the meta description for those posts as that's done in the same spot as the title are edited.

Whew! And that's just the start, but if you get those things cleaned up, you'll be well on your way to cleaning up the technical SEO of your site.

              Paul

                  Dogara,

Install the Yoast SEO for WordPress plugin. Then manually create descriptions and titles for your pages.

The duplicate content issue is most likely caused by disorganized categories or tags. Every time you categorize a post or tag content WordPress creates a new Archive page. This can create duplicate content on many pages of your site.

                  Thanks,

                  Don Silvernail

Unsolved Using Weglot on wordpress (errors)

                    wordpress weglot

Good day to you all, Does anyone have experience of the errors being pulled up by Moz about the utility of the weglot plugin on Wordpress? Moz is pulling up URLs such as: https://www.ibizacc.com/es/chapparal-2/?wg-choose-original=false These are classified under "redirect issues" and 99% of the pages are with the ?wg-choose parameter in the URL. Is this having an actual negative impact on my search or is it something more Moz related being highlighted. Any advice be appreciated and a resolution .. Im thinking I could exclude this parameter.

Moz-Specific 404 Errors Jumped with URLs that don't exist

Hello, I'm going to try and be as specific as possible concerning this weird issue, but I'd rather not say specific info about the site unless you think it's pertinent. So to summarize, we have a website that's owned by a company that is a division of another company. For reference, we'll say that: OURSITE.com is owned by COMPANY1 which is owned by AGENCY1 This morning, we got about 7,000 new errors in MOZ only (these errors are not in Search Console) for URLs with the company name or the agency name at the end of the url. So, let's say one post is: OURSITE.com/the-article/ This morning we have an error in MOZ for URLs OURSITE.com/the-article/COMPANY1 OURSITE.com/the-article/AGENCY1 x 7000+ articles we have created. Every single post ever created is now an error in MOZ because of these two URL additions that seem to come out of nowhere. These URLs are not in our Sitemaps, they are not in Google... They simply don't exist and yet MOZ created an an error with them. Unless they exist and I don't see them. Obviously there's a link to each company and agency site on the site in the about us section, but that's it.

                    WEbsite cannot be crawled

I have received the following message from MOZ on a few of our websites now Our crawler was not able to access the robots.txt file on your site. This often occurs because of a server error from the robots.txt. Although this may have been caused by a temporary outage, we recommend making sure your robots.txt file is accessible and that your network and server are working correctly. Typically errors like this should be investigated and fixed by the site webmaster. I have spoken with our webmaster and they have advised the below: The Robots.txt file is definitely there on all pages and Google is able to crawl for these files. Moz however is having some difficulty with finding the files when there is a particular redirect in place. For example, the page currently redirects from threecounties.co.uk/ to https://www.threecounties.co.uk/ and when this happens, the Moz crawler cannot find the robots.txt on the first URL and this generates the reports you have been receiving. From what I understand, this is a flaw with the Moz software and not something that we could fix form our end. _Going forward, something we could do is remove these rewrite rules to www., but these are useful redirects and removing them would likely have SEO implications. _ Has anyone else had this issue and is there anything we can do to rectify, or should we leave as is?

                    Robots.txt blocking Moz

Moz are reporting the robots.txt file is blocking them from crawling one of our websites. But as far as we can see this file is exactly the same as the robots.txt files on other websites that Moz is crawling without problems. We have never come up against this before, even with this site. Our stats show Rogerbot attempting to crawl our site, but it receives a 404 error. Can anyone enlighten us to the problem please? http://www.wychwoodflooring.com -Christina

Warnings, Notices, and Errors- don't know how to correct these

I have been watching my Notices, Warnings and Errors increase since I added a blog to our WordPress site. Is this effecting our SEO? We now have the following: 2 4XX errors. 1 is for a page that we changed the title and nav for in mid March. And one for a page we removed. The nav on the site is working as far as I can see. This seems like a cache issue, but who knows? 20 warnings for “missing meta description tag”. These are all blog archive and author pages. Some have resulted from pagination and are “Part 2, Part 3, Part 4” etc. Others are the first page for authors. And there is one called “new page” that I can’t locate in our Pages admin and have no idea what it is. 5 warnings for “title element too long”. These are also archive pages that have the blog name and so are pages I can’t access through the admin to control page title plus “part 2’s and so on. 71 Notices for “Rel Cononical”. The rel cononicals are all being generated automatically and are for pages of all sorts.  Some are for a content pages within the site, a bunch are blog posts, and archive pages for date, blog category and pagination archive pages 6 are 301’s. These are split between blog pagination, author and a couple of site content pages- contact and portfolio. Can’t imagine why these are here. 8 meta-robot nofollow. These are blog articles but only some of the posts. Don’t know why we are generating this for some and not all. And half of them are for the exact same page so there are really only 4 originals on this list. The others are dupes. 8 Blocked my meta-robots. And are also for the same 4 blog posts but duplicated twice each. We use All in One SEO. There is an option to use noindex for archives, categories that I do not have enabled.  And also to autogenerate descriptions which I do not have enabled. I wasn’t concerned about these at first, but I read these  (below) questions yesterday, and think I'd better do something as these are mounting up. I’m wondering if I should be asking our team for some code changes but not sure what exactly would be best. http://www.seomoz.org/q/pages-i-dont-want-customers-to-see http://www.robotstxt.org/meta.html Our site is http://www.fateyes.com Thanks so much for any assistance on this!

Use of the tilde in URLs

I just signed up for SEOMoz and sent my site through the first crawl. I use the tilde in my rewritten URLs. This threw my entire site into the Notice section 301 (permanent redirect) since each page redirects to the exact URL with the ~, not the %7e. I find conflicting information on the web - you can use the tilde in more recent coding guidelines where you couldn't in the old. It would be a huge thing to change every page in my site to use an underscore instead of a tilde int he URL. If Google is like SEOMoz and is 301 redirecting every page on the site, then I'll do it, but is it just an SEOMoz thing? I ran my site through Firebug and and all my pages show the 200 response header, not the 301 redirect. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hey guys, I'm on the free trial for SEOmoz PRO and I'm in love. One question, though. I've been looking all over the internet for a way to check Page Authority in bulk. Is there a way to do this? Would I need the SEOmoz API? And what is the charge? All I really need is a way to check Page Authority in bulk--no extra bells and whistles. Thanks, Brandon
