          I work on a very large site with two main types of content, static landing pages for products, and a forum & blogs (user created) under each product. Site has maybe 500k - 1 million pages. We do not have a sitemap at this time.
          Currently our SEO discoverability in general is good, Google is indexing new forum threads within 1-5 days roughly. Some of the "static" landing pages for our smaller, less visited products however do not have great SEO.
          Question is, could our SEO be improved by creating a sitemap, and if so, how could it be implemented? I see a few ways to go about it:

          1. Sitemap includes "static" product category landing pages only - i.e., the product home pages, the forum landing pages, and blog list pages. This would probably end up being 100-200 URLs.
          2. Sitemap contains the above but is also dynamically updated with new threads & blog posts.

          Option 2 seems like it would mean the sitemap is unmanageably long (hundreds of thousands of forum URLs). Would a crawler even parse something that size? Or with Option 1, could it cause our organically ranked pages to change ranking due to Google re-prioritizing the pages within the sitemap?
          Not a lot of information out there on this topic, appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

            Agreed, you'll likely want to go with option #2. Dynamic sitemaps are a must when you're dealing with large sites like this. We advise them on all of our clients with larger sites. If your forum content is important for search then these are definitely important to include as the content likely changes often and might be naturally deeper in the architecture.

            In general, I'd think of sitemaps from a discoverability perspective instead of a ranking one. The primary goal is to give Googlebot an avenue to crawl your sites content regardless of internal linking structure.

              Go with option 2, there is no scaling issue here. I have worked with and for sites that have a high multiplier on the number of sitemaps and pages that they're submitting, in some cases up to 100M pages. In all cases, Google was totally fine in crawling and processing the data that was there. As long as you follow the guidelines (max 50K URLs in a sitemap) you're fine as you're just providing another file that usually doesn't exceed about 50MB (depending on if you also add images to the sitemap). If you have an engineering team build the right infrastructure you can easily deal with thousands of these files and run them automated every day/week.

              My main focus on big sites is also to streamline their sitemaps to have sitemaps with just the last 50.000 pages and the same for the last 50.000 pages that were updated. This way you're able to also monitor the indexation level of these pages. If you are able to, for example, combine the data from log file analysis you can say: we added 50K pages and Google in the last days were able to crawl X percentage of that.

                Sitemap.xml strategy for site with thousands of pages

                I have a client that has a HUGE website with thousands of product pages. We don't currently have a sitemap.xml because it would take so much power to map the sitemap. I have thought about creating a sitemap for the key pages on the website - but didn't want to hurt the SEO on the thousands of product pages. If you have a sitemap.xml that only has some of the pages on your site - will it negatively impact the other pages, that Google has indexed - but are not listed on the sitemap.xml.

                Lost with conical, nofollow noindex. Not sure how to use it on a dyanmic php site with multiple region select options

                I have a site with multiple regions the main page after a region is selected is login.php but the regions are defined by ?rid=11 , 12, etc. These are being picked up as duplicate content but they are all different regions. As i hired external php coders to develop most of the site I am scared to start meddling with any of the raw code and would like some advise on how to not show these as duplicate content. should i use noindex nofollow or connical? if Connical how do i set it up on the main login.php page? p.s. i am an extreme nube to seo

                Using Sitemap Generator - Good/Bad?

                Hi all I recently purchased the full licence of XML Sitemap Generator (http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/standalone-google-sitemap-generator.html) but have yet used it. The idea behind this is that I can deploy the package on each large e-commerce website I build and the sitemap will be generated as often as I set it be and the search engines will also be pinged automatically to inform them of the update. No more manual XML sitemap creation for me! Now it sounds great but I do not know enough about pinging search engines with XML sitemap updates on a regular basis and if this is a good or bad thing? Can it have any detrimental effect when the sitemap is changing (potentially) every day with new URLs for products being added to the site? Any thoughts or optinions would be greatly appreciated.                 MBG Tracker...how to use it?

                So I am a new blogger that has been submitting guest blog posts to a number of different blogs. It was recommended that I use the MBG Tracker so I can track the back links. The problem is that I am totally lost on how to use this tool. As I said before I am new to this whole thing and I am not really sure what constitutes a "base link" and a "back link." In the author bylines we are linking to different pages within a larger website. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it!

                Forum Profile Links

                Are they really important? Many preach they are, and there are tonnes of services out there who give you thousands of forum profile links in no time. I strictly believe in genuine links built the hard way, and definitely don't want to get into anything which is black hat. Please suggest if building several Forum Profile Links is an appropriate way of building links?

                Using a third party server to host site elements

                Hi guys - I have a client who are recently experiencing a great deal of more traffic to their site. As a result, their web development agency have given them a server upgrade to cope with the new demand. One thing they have also done is put all website scripts, CSS files, images, downloadable content (such as PDFs) - onto a 3rd party server (Amazon S3). Apparently this was done so that my clients server just handles the page requests now - and all other elements are then grabbed from the Amazon s3 server. So basically, this means any HTML content and web pages are still hosted through my clients domain - but all other content is accessible through an Amazon s3 server URL. I'm wondering what SEO implications this will have for my clients domain? While all pages and HTML content is still accessible thorugh their domain name, each page is of course now making many server calls to the Amazon s3 server through external URLs (s3.amazonaws.com). I imagine this will mean any elements sitting on the Amazon S3 server can no longer contribute value to the clients SEO profile - because that actual content is not physically part of their domain anymore. However what I am more concerned about is whether all of these external server calls are going to have a negative effect on the web pages value overall. Should I be advising my client to ensure all site elements are hosted on their own server, and therefore all elements are accessible through their domain? Hope this makes sense (I'm not the best at explaining things!)
