I work on education websites, and our sites are being flagged by SEO and accessibility checkers for having multiple H1s.

The home pages have the site name as an h3 in the hero image, and an aspirational headline (think: Be Like Mike) as an H1. The sub-pages have two H1s: one on the site name in the banner image, and the other on the page title.

Note that the site name is very keyword-rich.

If we were to remove the H1 and H3 tags from the hero/banner images, would it do any SEO harm? At the same time, we’d rewrite the H1 on the home page to be more keyword-focused.

Any other options? I also read that it’s OK to have multiple H1s as long as it’s clear which H1 belongs to the heading area and which one belongs to the body area of the page.

          Thanks in advance!

@uwpce one more thing to keep in mind - coherence of H1 with meta title and description tags. These two things are often disregarded by webmasters, but these are important to give Googlebot a better picture of what this page is about. So:

            • one H1 tag
            • this H1 tag corresponds to your meta title
            • meta description is a keyword rich summary of the page that will help your CTR on Google.

@uwpce you should re-decentralize H tags, use only 1 H1 tag, the rest you should adjust to H2, H3, H4 accordingly.

While there is some level of uncertainty about the impact of multiple H1 tags, there are several issues about the structure you describe. On the "sub-pages", if you have an H1 tag on the site name, that means the same H1 tag is used on a bunch of pages. This is something you want to avoid. Instead, develop a strategy of which pages you would like to target to rank for which search queries, and then use the page's primary query in the H1 tag.

The other issue I see in your current structure is that it sounds like you have heading tags potentially out of sequence. Accessibility checker tools will flag this as an issue, and indeed it can cause frustration for people with vision disabilities accessing your pages with screen readers. You want to make sure that you preserve a hierarchy where an H1 is above the H2 is above the H3, etc.

Is using a H1 tag in a logo image bad for SEO?

We have brand logos on certain pages that have H1 tags in them - the H1 text being the brand's name, as this is what we'd want the title of the page to be.  The logos are at the top of the page instead of a written title. But is this the best option for SEO? Do search engines value H1 tags in images as highly as a standard H1 tag?Would it be better for SEO to add an alt tag to the logo and add a separate H1 tag on the page that's also the name of the brand?

Tags - Good or bad for SEO

We are getting Moz errors for duplicate content because tag pages share the same blog posts. Is there any way to fix this? Are these errors bad for SEO, or can I simply disregard these and ignore them? We are also getting Moz errors for missing descriptions on tag pages. I am unsure how to fix these errors, as we do not actually have pages for these on our WordPress site where we are able to put in a description. I have heard that having tags can be good for SEO? (We don't mind having several links that show up when searching for us on google...) As far as the SEO goes, I am not sure what to do. Does anyone know the best strategy?

Issues with Multiple H1 tags on homepage?

Hi folks, My homepage has 3 identical H1 tags due to the fact that I have had to create individual hero images (with headings) for desktop, tablet and mobile. I couldn't get my theme to display the layout in exactly the way I wanted on each device without doing a specific hero image and tag for each device type. Does this have a major impact on my SEO? Thanks,
                    Mike.

Duplicate content with tagging and categories

Hello, Moz is showing that a site has duplicate content - which appears to be because of tags and categories. It is a relatively new site, with only a few blog publications so far. This means that the same articles are displayed under a number of different tags and categories... Is this something I should worry about, or just wait until I have more content? The 'tag' and 'category' pages are not really pages I would expect or aim for anyone to find in google results anyway. Would be glad to here any advice / opinions on this Thanks!

                    Category page canonical tag

I know this question has been asked a few times on here but I'm looking for very specific advice. Currently when you go to a category, say http://www.bronterose.co.uk/range.html, a canonical tag is added to the head of the page. There are plenty of "variant" pages which carry the same tag, for example: /range.html?p=2
                    /range.html?p=3
                    /range.html?dir=asc&order=price
/range.html?dir=asc&limit=all&order=price Is it wise to push the "link juice" for each of these variant pages to the top level page? Or should each variant page have its own unique canonical tag? After reading many blog posts, guides and papers I'm truly confused! Any general guidance or recommendations would be much appreciated. Chris.

ALT tagging images with keyword. What is too much?

I was wondering about the best practices of ALT tags in images. Say if you have an eCommerce site and you're on a product page. This product page has 5 images of the same product (different images), should you give every image an Alt tag with the keyword for that page? Or, is that keyword stuffing, and it would actually be best practice be to provide alt tags on just one image?

                    Title and Heading Tags

Firstly I would like to comment on how helpful this site is. I haven't posted much before but have been reading tonnes of answers for many months now and have been finding it really useful. I used the SEOmoz scanner and the main problem highlighted was duplicate content so I started to add 'customer product reviews' I had received and unique 'further information' to each page (hopefully this was the right thing to do to solve duplicate content! : ) ) Then I looked at heading and title tags. Currently I set title tags for each product page to be "Brand Name- Product Name" but after doing some research we are thinking of putting Keyword Description of Product | Product Name | Brand Name (around 60 characters long). So is this the advised thing to do and create unique titles that are relevant to each specific product page for over 200 pages we have? In addition, any advice on setting optimum tags would be great. We keep reading varying tips online. I gather ideally h1 needs to be a shorter keyword rich version of the title tag? Many Thanks
