          Hello everyone,

I'm currently facing a challenging situation and would greatly appreciate your expertise and guidance.

I own a website, maniflexa.com, primarily focused on the digital agency niche. About 3 months ago, I created a subfolder, maniflexa.com/emploi/, dedicated to job listings which is a completely different niche. The subfolder has around 120 posts and pages.

Unfortunately, since I created the subfolder, the rankings of my main site have been negatively impacted. I was previously ranking #1 for all local digital services keywords, but now, only 2 out of 16 keywords have maintained their positions. Other pages have dropped to positions 30 and beyond.

I'm considering a solution and would like your advice: I'm planning to purchase a new domain and migrate the content from maniflexa.com/emploi/ to newdomain.com. However, I want to ensure a smooth migration without affecting the main domain maniflexa.com rankings and losing backlinks from maniflexa.com/emploi/ pages.

Is moving the subfolder content to a new domain a viable solution? And how can I effectively redirect all pages from the subfolder to the new domain while preserving page ranks and backlinks?
I wish they did, but GSC doesn't offer a solution to migration content from subfolder to a new domain. 😢

Help a fellow Mozer. Thanks for giving a hand.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue:

            Thorough Content Audit:

Evaluate the content in maniflexa.com/emploi/ and identify the key pages that contribute positively to your rankings.
            Keyword Mapping:

Map the keywords associated with the main site (maniflexa.com) and the emploi subfolder. Identify any overlapping keywords.
            Backlink Analysis:

Examine the backlinks to maniflexa.com/emploi/ pages. Identify high-quality backlinks that contribute to your main site's authority.
            New Domain Purchase:

Purchase the new domain (newdomain.com) and ensure it aligns with the content of maniflexa.com/emploi/.
            Create Redirect Strategy:

Implement 301 redirects from maniflexa.com/emploi/ to the corresponding pages on newdomain.com. This will preserve SEO value and redirect users seamlessly.
            Update Internal Links:

Review and update internal links on maniflexa.com pointing to emploi subfolder pages. Redirect them to the newdomain.com pages.
            Update Sitemap:

Submit an updated sitemap for maniflexa.com to reflect the changes in the emploi subfolder. This helps search engines understand the new structure.
            Inform Google Search Console (GSC):

Although GSC might not offer a direct solution, inform Google about the domain change through the "Change of Address" tool. This is available in the GSC under the Settings.
            Monitor Traffic and Rankings:

Keep a close eye on your website's traffic and rankings during and after the migration. Use tools like Google Analytics and other SEO monitoring tools.
            Content Enhancement:

Consider enhancing the content on maniflexa.com to reinforce its relevance to the digital agency niche. This can aid in the recovery of lost rankings.
            Communicate Changes:

Inform your audience about the domain change through newsletters, social media, and on-site notifications.
            Seek Professional Help if Needed:

If you're unsure about any step, consider consulting with SEO professionals or agencies to ensure a smooth transition.

Migrating subfolder content to a new domain while ensuring safety and SEO integrity requires careful planning and execution. Here's a detailed step-by-step guide:

Steps to Migrate Subfolder Content to a New Domain Safely:

                    1. Create a Backup:
Before making any changes, back up your entire website, including files, databases, and content, to prevent data loss.
                    2. Map Out the Migration Strategy:
Plan the migration process and ensure a comprehensive understanding of the content structure and URLs.
                    3. Set Up the New Domain:
Acquire the new domain and set up hosting and server configurations.
                    4. Mirror the Structure:
Create a similar folder structure on the new domain to maintain the subfolder organization.
                    5. 301 Redirects:
Implement 301 redirects from the old subfolder URLs to the corresponding new domain URLs. This redirects users and search engines and preserves SEO value.
                    6. Update Internal Links:
Review internal links within your content and update them to reflect the new domain URLs.
                    7. Update XML Sitemap:
Generate a new XML sitemap for the new domain and submit it to search engines through Google Search Console.
                    8. Update External Links:
Notify authoritative external sites linking to your subfolder content about the domain change.
                    9. Monitor Google Search Console:
Keep a close eye on Google Search Console for any crawl errors or issues after migration.
                    10. Monitor Traffic and Rankings:
Monitor website traffic and search engine rankings post-migration to detect any significant drops.
                    11. Inform Users and Customers:
Notify users, customers, subscribers, and relevant stakeholders about the domain migration.
                    12. Post-Migration SEO Audit:
Conduct a thorough SEO audit post-migration to ensure all elements are working correctly.
                    13. Monitor for a Few Weeks:
Continuously monitor website performance, user experience, and SEO metrics for a few weeks post-migration.
                    14. Address Issues Promptly:
Address any unforeseen issues promptly and make necessary adjustments.
                    15. Update Robots.txt and .htaccess:
Update robots.txt and .htaccess files to ensure proper indexing and redirection.
                    16. Submit Updated URLs:
Re-submit updated URLs to search engines for indexing.
                    17. Test Proper Functionality:
Test forms, buttons, scripts, and other functionalities to ensure they are working correctly on the new domain.
                    18. Engage SEO Professionals if Needed:
For larger or complex migrations, consider seeking assistance from experienced SEO professionals.
                      Important Notes:
Properly handling redirects and maintaining URL structure integrity is crucial for retaining SEO rankings.
Communicate the migration to users and stakeholders to minimize confusion and maintain trust.
It's important to thoroughly plan and execute the migration process to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth transition without compromising SEO rankings or user experience.

Google keeps marking different pages as duplicates

                        seo

My website has many pages like this: mywebsite/company1/valuation mywebsite/company2/valuation mywebsite/company3/valuation mywebsite/company4/valuation ... These pages describe the valuation of each company. These pages were never identical but initially, I included a few generic paragraphs like what is valuation, what is a valuation model, etc... in all the pages so some parts of these pages' content were identical. Google marked many of these pages as duplicated (in Google Search Console) so I modified the content of these pages: I removed those generic paragraphs and added other information that is unique to each company. As a result, these pages are extremely different from each other now and have little similarities. Although it has been more than 1 month since I made the modification, Google still marks the majority of these pages as duplicates, even though Google has already crawled their new modified version. I wonder whether there is anything else I can do in this situation? Thanks

Breadcrumbs and multiple parent categories on Shopify site - what's the answer?

navigation breadcrumb trail breadcrumbs ux seo

Hi Mozzers... I'm working on a Shopify site - it is polyhierarchical with multiple parent categories for each product. Not uncommon with Shopify because of issues with faceted nav on that platform. The problem is that defining ONE breadcrumb trail back to the homepage, it works against UX, as people will be wanting to go back to the previous search results, primarily, to revisit the parent category specific search (this is an ecommerce site with a huge number of products). So heaven knows what to do. I could do: (1) Home / Product to avoid the issue. Not very good for UX though as where is the previous category page (where more than likely a product search was carried out). (2) Home / Specific Previous Search Page - Parent Category / Product (if that is possible without upsetting SEO performance - I don't think it is - but any advice is welcome) (3) or I could define one specific path and also include: Return to Previous Page / Search as a separate clickback link outside of but adjacent to the breadcrumb trail (I think Macy's used to do that): https://baymard.com/blog/ecommerce-breadcrumbs The problem with defining a specific path is it flys in the face of UX in the context of this site! Although of course defining one path seems to be best practice for SEO. Any help would be gratefully received! Thanks a million, Luke

Why does my old brand name still show up on organic search but as my new brand name and domain?

Hello mozers! I have quite the conundrum. My client used to have the unfortunate brand name "Meetoo" - which by the way they had before the movement happened! So naturally, they rebranded to the name Vevox in March 2019 to avoid confusion to users. However, when you search for their old brand name "Meetoo" the first organic link that pops up is their domain www.vevox.com. Now, this wouldn't normally be a problem, however it is when any #MeToo news appears in the media and we get a sudden influx or wrong traffic. I've searched the HTML and content for the term "Meetoo" but can only find one trace of this name through a widget. Not enough to hold an organic spot. My only other thinking is that www.vevox.com is redirected from www.meetoo.com. So I'm assuming this is why Vevox appear under the search term "Meetoo". How can I remove the homepage www.vevox.com from appearing for the search term "meetoo"? Can anyone help? AvGGYBc

Move to new domain using Canonical Tag

At the moment, I am moving from olddomain.com (niche site) to the newdomain.com (multi-niche site). Due to some reasons, I do not want to use 301 right now and planning to use the canonical pointing to the new domain instead. Would Google rank the new site instead of the old site? From what I have learnt, the canonical tag lets Google know that which is the main source of the contents. Thank you very much!

SEO value in multiple backlinks from same domain and from various sub-domains.

A site has a link to my site as one of their main tabs, which means whenever a user clicks through to another page within the site, my link - being a main tab - is there. This creates thousands of links from this site. How does Google treat this? Do we have a rough formula estimate. In other words, assume it creates 1,000 backlinks would the SEO value be around the same as if I had just 2 link total as a main tab, but on 2 different non-related sites? Or, does it actually count fully as 1,000 links? Links from various sub-domains. Several .EDU's are linking to my site. Different schools within the overall same university. Example: nursing.abc.edu links to my site, but so does business.abc.edu. For SEO does that count as much as if I had links from complete non-related universities, or would Google evaluate that these links are related (since same main domain) and that will discount any links more than 1 to some extent? If discounted, then what do we estimate the discount to be? thank yoyu

                        How do you archive content?

In this video from Google Webmasters about content, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8s6Y4mx9Vw around 0:57 it is advised to "archive any content that is no longer relevant". My question is how do you exactly do that? By adding noindex to those pages, by removing all internal links to that page, by completely removing those from the website? How do you technically archive content? watch?v=y8s6Y4mx9Vw
