      Hello,

      Most of you heard from the launch of the new format for microdata: Schema.org and my question is about the different types of Schema they provide. Our websites provide an overview of courses, visitors can search/filter training courses and most important: read peer reviews.

      Until now we formatted (the source) of those courses with the schema type "Product" because it allows us to provide search engines with metadata about reviews via the "Aggregrated Rating". Recently we updated the information about courses, to also provide start dates and locations to users, just like the schema type for: "Events".

      Because we would like to provide search engines also with both types of data I would like to know your opinion. Schema.org looks like not to support the Aggregated Rating for Events and vice versa for Startdates/Locations for the Product type. And combining the two Schema types also does not looks like an option because we can't put them on the same level like it should be.

      So what would you recommend to use for kind of schema type(s), are we able to use the 'Product' type next to the 'Event' type and so to combine them?

        The purpose behind 'the schema' is to help search engines better match semantic search terms with relevant user information. Word out there is that is doesn't help in the SERPs.  See this article.  But it might and Google may have integrated it into their algo yesterday for all we know.

        With it being relatively new in the search landscape and little evidence of testing out there, I'd recommend that you donate some time to the cause 🙂  It just so happens that you'll likely get your answer from doing so.  Here's how I'd do it:

        1. Choose the pages you'll be measuring...  the more you use, the better the data...

        2. Measure where these pages rank in your search results before making any changes.

        3.. Divide those pages into thirds and apply the 'Events' schema to a third, the 'Aggregate Rating' to a third, and apply nothing to the remaining third.

        4. Track and report your findings.

        Obviously, there are some potential hang-ups here (ie. if you aren't ranking in the top 50 for your target keywords and are using SEOMoz to track).  After rubbing my magic 8-ball, I'm going to prophesize that you won't see a significant difference for a few reasons (or any at all).

        Finally, I'd suggest that you persuade the engines to focus on the aggregate review information.  If you look around, you'll notice that reviews are being increasingly integrated as major indicators in search algos.  Events?  Not so much.

        There are many issues at hand, but you get to decide which are important and which you're going to act on.  Either way, good luck!

          Is 301 redirect the only way when using Vanity URLs?

          We have been using vanity urls for some of our pages. Mostly the pages that have a vanity URL have a long URL length. But now the problem is, the vanity URL is getting displayed on the search engine when the particular keyword related to the page is entered. I checked the google search console, the vanity URL is indexed and the original URL remains unindexed. What should I do? Is adding 301 redirect to the vanity URLs are solution? Since some of vanity URLs are not redirecting to the original. Some of the original pages are not getting traffic. Also, can using canonical tag help?

          An immediate and long-term plan for expired Events?

          Hello all, I've spent the past day scouring guides and walkthroughs and advice and Q&As regarding this (including on here), and while I'm pretty confident in my approach to this query, I wanted to crowd source some advice in case I might be way off base. I'll start by saying that Technical SEO is arguably my weakest area, so please bear with me. Anyhoozles, onto the question (and advance apologies for being vague): PROBLEM I'm working on a website that, in part, works with providers of a service to open their own programs/centers. Most programs tend to run their own events, which leads to an influx of Event pages, almost all of which are indexed. At my last count, there were approximately 800 indexed Event pages. The problem? Almost all of these have expired, leading to a little bit of index bloat. THINGS TO CONSIDER A spot check revealed that traffic for each Event occurs for about a two-to-four week period then disappears completely once the Event expires. About half of these indexed Event pages redirect to a new page. So the indexed URL will be /events/name-of-event but will redirect to /state/city/events/name-of-event. QUESTIONS I'M ASKING How do we address all these old events that provide no real value to the user? What should a future process look like to prevent this from happening? MY SOLUTION Step 1: Add a noindex to each of the currently-expired Event pages. Since some of these pages have link equity (one event had 8 unique links pointing to it), I don't want to just 404 all of them, and redirecting them doesn't seem like a good idea since one of the goals is to reduce the number of indexed pages that provide no value to users. Step 2: Remove all of the expired Event pages from the Sitemap and resubmit. This is an ongoing process due to a variety of factors, so we'd wrap this up into a complete sitemap overhaul for the client. We would also be removing the Events from the website so there are not internal links pointing to them. Step 3: Write a rule (well, have their developers write a rule) that automatically adds noindex to each Event page once it's expired. Step 4: Wait for Google to re-crawl the site and hopefully remove the expired Events from its index. Thoughts? I feel like this is the simplest way to get things done quickly while preventing future expired events from being indexed. All of this is part of a bigger project involving the overhaul of the way Events are linked to on the website (since we wouldn't be 404ing them, I would simply suggest that they be removed entirely from all navigation), but ultimately, automating the process once we get this concern cleaned up is the direction I want to go.           Schema markup for Webinars

          I'm looking for a solution to implement schema markup for our webinars. We have an events page that has a list of upcoming events, as well as a list of the webinars we've done with a link to YouTube to watch the webinar. The webinars on our events page have the title and date. What kind of schema markup can we implement for these past events? It is not really an event, but it's not a video either (unless we embed the video on our site). Any tips? (**Also, I would like to use JSON-LD instead of HTML to implement the schema). Thanks!

          Schema Markup Errors - Priority or Not?

          Greetings All... I've been digging through the search console on a few of my sites and I've been noticing quite a few structured data errors. Most of the errors are related to: hcard, hentry and hatom. Most of them are missing author & entry-title, while the other one is  missing: fn. I recently saw an article on SEL about Google's focus on spammy mark-up. The sites I use are built and managed by vendors, so I would have to impress upon them the impact of these errors and have them prioritize, then fix them. My question is whether or not this should be prioritized? Should I have them correct these errors sooner than later or can I take a phased approach? I haven't noticed any loss in traffic or anything like that, I'm more focused on what negative impact a "phased approach" could have. Any thoughts?

          How to deal with duplicated content on product pages?

          Hi, I have a webshop with products with different sizes and colours. For each item I have a different URL, with almost the same content (title tag, product descriptions, etc). In order to prevent duplicated content I'am wondering what is the best way to solve this problem, keeping in mind: -Impossible to create one page/URL for each product with filters on colour and size -Impossible to rewrite the product descriptions in order to be unique I'm considering the option to canonicolize the rest of de colours/size variations, but the disadvantage is that in case the product is not in stock it disappears from the website.           How do I handle duplicate content of the same product in Multiple product categories?

          I am building a BigCommerce store for selling framed art.  Many of the pieces of art will fall in more than one product category. Let's say I have a framed print of a photograph of a western landscape.  This piece of art would fit into these categories;  "western", "landscape", and "photography".   I would have three pages with duplicate content for just this one framed print. Will google give me less page rank due to this?  Can all the link juice be given to just one of the three categories by use of rel=canonical?  If so, does anyone know how to do this for a bigcommerce site? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Kelly
