Umbrella company and multiple domains

I'm really sorry for asking this question yet again. I have searched through previous answers but couldn't see something exactly like this I think.
There is a website called example .com. It is a sort of umbrella company for 4 other separate domains within it - 4 separate companies.
The Home page of the "umbrella" company website is example.com. It is just an image with no content except navigation on it to direct to the 4 company websites.
The other pages of website example.com are the 4 separate companies domains. So on the navigation bar there is :
Home page = example.com
company1page = company1domain.com
company2page= company2domain.com etc. etc.
Clicking "home" will take you back to example.com (which is just an image).
How bad or good is this structure for SEO? Would you recommend any changes to help them rank better? The "home" page has no authority or links, and neither do 3 out of the 4 other domains. The 4 companies websites are independent in content (although theme is the same). What's bringing them altogether is under this umbrella website - example.com.

I agree with Peter, I have worked with a company who had several different products that are huge so they used the similar structure. I think in order to give better user experience they should have some text on home page (instead of image only) but i think from the technical SEO perspective there is no big problem with this!

I don't think there are any fundamental issues with the structure for SEO. Many large corporates will have an "umbrella" corporate "group" website with links to their subsidiary sites.
The critical factor for SEO as with any website and its pages is the relevancy of its content based on the many ranking factors discussed in this article: http://a-moz.groupbuyseo.org/search-ranking-factors

I have a GoDaddy website and have multiple homepages
I have GoDaddy website builder and a new website http://ecuadorvisapros.com and I notices through your crawl test that there are 3 home pages http://ecuadorvisapros with a 302 temporary redirect, http://www.ecuadorvisapros.com/ with no redirect and http://www.ecuadorvisapros/home.html. Does a subdomain benefit from being on a high authority domain?
I think the title sums up the question, but does a new subdomain get any ranking benefits from being on a pre-existing high authority domain. Or does the new subdomain have to fend for itself in the SERPs?

Expired domain 404 crawl error
I recently purchased a Expired domain from auction and after I started my new site on it, I am noticing 500+ "not found" errors in Google Webmaster Tools, which are generating from the previous owner's contents.Should I use a redirection plugin to redirect those non-exist posts to any new post(s) of my site? or I should use a 301 redirect? or I should leave them just as it is without taking further action? .ca and. com domains
Hello, currently the main site im working on is a .com, but have the .ca version purchased from register.com. should i have this setup to redirect to the .com site. will google see these as dup content. We have the .ca for our canadian customers but both sites are identical. Thank you

Multiple Domains on 1 IP Address
We have multiple domains on the same C Block IP Address. Our main site is an eCommerce site, and we have separate domains for each of the following: our company blog (and other niche blogs), forum site, articles site and corporate site. They are all on the same server and hosted by the same web-hosting company. They all have unique and different content. Speaking strictly from a technical standpoint, could this be hurting us? How to 301 multiple domain names to a single domain
Hey, I tried to find and answer to this seemingly simple question, but no luck. So, I have one domain name with a website attached to it. I also registered all the other domain names that are similar to it or have different extensions - I want to redirect all the other domain names to my one main domain name without getting penalised by the big G. It looks like this: www.mainsite.com - this is my main domain I also have www.mainsite.com.au, www.mainsite.org, and www.mainsite.org.au which I all want to just redirect to www.mainsite.com I have been told that the best way to do this is a 301 redirect, but to do that you need to make a CNAME for all the other domains that points to www.mainsite.com. My problem is that I cannot seem to create a CNAME record for http://mainsite.com - I have it working for http://www.mainsite.com but not the non www record. What should I be doing differently? Is it just my DNS provider is useless? Thanks, Anthony
