Does css float affect SEO?

It is generally believed that the closer the content is to the top of the page, the better it is for SEO. If that's incorrect, please let me know. I have a 2 column site where the left menu is navigation and right side is content. Obviously, the left menu appears in the code before the content does, but I can flip them around via css float. If I do that, the content will appear on the left visually, even though in the code it still comes after the left side navigation. Do either positions affect seo?

I would not worry about moving the code, I would use html5 elements to tell the search engine what is what. Such as <header> <nav> <menu> <aside></aside> </menu> </nav> </header>

To follow up on what Holger said - you are not using CSS to do anything "tricky" to game Google. By placing the important content at the top your raw coded content is structured exactly as it should be. What you are doing is 100% legit and it could also be very easily be argued that you are improving the code from a structural standpoint.

I think you can test this issue best with a "Text-Only-Browser" to see how search engines see your page. Here are some links:
If your page is already indexed with Google, put in the following URL:
 http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:example.com
Google will show in the grey cache-info box a link "text-only-version"The Safari-Browser shows a "reader Icon" if there is a lot of text on a page...
Or you may check this link for more Text-Browsers: http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/blog/seo-tools/5-text-only-browsers/Hope this helps!

Does homepage SEO exist at all?
hi Just read a Yoast article explaining that the homepage should never be optimized for a specific keyword and should only be optimized for its business or brand name. i have a large site that I'd like to rank (or increase traffic for as I know people get irritated with that term now) for 'Campervan hire'. It has plenty of sub pages going after 'Campervan hire 'location'' for example. it makes sense to me for the homepage keyword - my core keyword - to be 'Campervan hire' and for the homepage to be optimised for this. However, the article I've just read (https://yoast.com/homepage-seo/) suggests a separate page for this keyword. What are your thoughts pls?? thanks On-Page Optimization | | CamperConnect142

Generic domain for SEO versus Brand name
I am currently building a retail e-commerce site in a highly competitive area. We have a generic brand name; e.g. kitchen-knives.com and we also have another brand name, e.g. 'slycers.com' We have 3 options that I can see and I would like to know which is better for SEO. Build generic.com as a blog site. Link to brand.com 301 redirect from generic.com to brand.com. Use generic.com as anchor text in all links 301 redirect from brand.com to generic.com . Use generic.com as anchor text in all links Also, if there are other better options, then I would appreciate the input! thanks On-Page Optimization | | cestor0

SEO value of "in the news" links on home page?
Notice more sites have an "in the News" section on the home page, or something similar like press releases... Apart from providing users fresh content, is there an SEO value to this? What is the explanation for this? Have a feeling the answer is obvious but just not too sure Thanks a lot. On-Page Optimization | | inhouseninja0

Is there an SEO penalty for text that appears only in a pop-up box when you hover the mouse over an icon?
A client of mine wants to streamline the look of his web pages, taking some of the visible body copy and putting it into boxes that pop up when you hover the mouse over an icon. My understanding is that search engines will index this pop-up text. However, do they penalize pages that have text in pop-up boxes out of concern that those pages are spammy? In this case, the text and the page are perfectly legitimate e-commerce pages. Thanks for any insights you can offer.
