What are best practices for rewriting (and then redirecting) blog URLs? I refresh old blog posts on our blog every month and many of them have URLs that are too long or could be improved. However, many of them also already get decent organic traffic and I don't want to lose traffic due to a URL redirect. Are there any best practices or "rules" I can follow when deciding whether to re-write and redirect blog URLs?
      Thanks!

Redirect rules are typically used for old paths that you'd like to redirect to new ones. In contrast, a Rewrite rule does not change the original URL; it simply serves the content of the rule destination at the original path.

          Dear Emily:

For me these are the main reasons why i've decised to redirect an url:

          • If it´s a website when the product is discontinued and exists another similar product.

          • If it´s a blog if there's an important problem of cannibalization and i decide the final article will be a very best version of the original,

I hope this can clarified you.

          Victoria

Hi, there are no "best practices" besides setting the 301 redirect (just make sure not to delete the "old" post). You'll probably lose traffic for some weeks until Google fully processes the redirect, but eventually you'll end up recovering the lost rankings (I have redirected many posts and websites and that has always been the case).

            Hope that helps!

Should I redirect or add content, to 47 Pages?

              redirect redirects

We have an insurance agency website with 47 pages that have duplicate/low content warnings. What's the best way to handle this? I'm I right in thinking I have 2 options? Either add new content or redirect the page? Thanks in advance 🙂

Write new articles or republish old ones?

              content development content optimization

              Hi,
we run a tourism information website about a region in italy, and each year, during special occasions such as christmas, easter and so on we publish an article with a "what to do on Christmas / Easter / .... in the Langhe" (collecting events, activities, etc.). Is it better to "reuse" the old articles and change only the year in the title and of course the content (providing that we are gonna keep the URL without year), or to publish a new one? thanks!

              slug Link redirect to subdomain?

              redirect subdomain link building

              Hi !
Im Levi new here and new in the world of SEO, please dont judge if my questions are silly. Back on the days when the site was built we thought it is a good ideea to have subdomains that together with the domain name represent our main keywords.
ex. https://stansted.tonorwich.uk, https://heathrow.tonorwich.uk, https://luton.tonorwich.uk, https://gatwick.tonorwich.uk. There is content on this subdomains, would it make any difference from SEO perspective if we create slugs that redirect to these subdomains? for example creating https://tonorwich.uk/taxi-minibus-vip-tesla-norwich-to-stansted that redirects to https://stansted.tonorwich.uk ? Or better create these slugs with slightly different content?
              Any ideeas would be appreciated.
              Thanks in advance!

What is the difference between "document" and "object" moved redirect errors?

              redirect chain redirect

What is the difference between "document" and "object" moved redirect errors? I'm used to see "object moved" as a redirect chain issue that needs to be fixed, but this week my report contained a "document moved" redirect chain issue. And it's on our homepage. Looks like it might be a HTTP versus an HTTPS issue.

              Wordpress Duplicate Pages/ URL's - Help !

Hi guys, I have been running SEOMoz for just over a month and slowly cleaning up one of my Wordpress Blogs.   While going through the crawl reports I have noticed that I have duplicate pages showing on the crawl. For example, the main post would be; www.xxxxx.com/blog/post-title Then I see another URL which would be; **www.xxxx.com/blog/page/59 ** When I click on either URL it goes back to the actual post title URL. What's with these page URL's ?   Isn't these two URL's showing duplicate content to the search engines ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
