I'm looking for some advice on switching domains for my survey/giveaway website.
I purchased a website that gets around 1,500 in traffic and makes a few hundred in Adsense. The previous owner had rebranded the site and changed the domain which ended up hurting his SEO and traffic. Before that it was getting 10,000 in traffic on the old domain.
It's been a few years since the rebrand but the original domain still holds a lot of authority and got way more traffic. Should I consider switching the website back to the original domain to try to improve rankings again or should I just focus on the new domain?
The website now is snipon.com and the previous domain name was surveyh.com
I'm wondering if switching back to the original domain will still be beneficial or if it will just mess up what's happening now on the rebranded site.

@Suvidit-Academy said in Should I switch back to my old domain?:

As you didn't mention how earlier the Domain is shifted from old domain to running domain, as to handle the SEO part Google have a solution, you have to update the shift in domain in Google Search Console so that Google can properly index your website with a proper 301 redirect of the old domain to the new domain.

            .
            Switching Back to Old Domain

Now if you think you should shift back to earlier domain , Handling SEO for a shift is Manageable, but the complication is to deal with Branding, as you have to make people aware of the name change and regain the trust.

At first before making a decision to change the from new domain to old domain check the following

            • Why the last owner switched to new domain.
            • List the current redirect data from old domain to new domain.
            • Check for old domain direct hits.
            • Look for any other data that is helpful to understand the Branding part of the old domain.

Once you have this data, compare it with new domain data and try to analyse do we need to switch to old or not.

            .
            Other Possible Reasons

Fall in the Organic Traffic may not just because of Shift to new Domain, but there can be various factors like...

            • Branding Factor
            • Google algorithm change
            • Change in trend or people behaviour
            • New competitor getting more traffic for your target keywords.
            • Pages are penalized by Google for violating its quality guidelines.
            • Technical issue with your website.

Please feel free to ask your doubts at [email protected]

            Hi dear friend;
I had a valid domain named aekala for about two years, but due to a brand name change, I migrated to another domain named Avesta.house.
My question is: How long will it take for the previous site's credit and ratings to be transferred to the new site? (It's now been about 3 weeks since my transition and the results are very poor and still have some pages with the same name as before in the results.

Switching back to your old domain should be a decision based on the reasons that led to the initial change, SEO implications, branding, costs, and long-term strategy. If the issues prompting the switch have been resolved, and your old domain is well-established and recognized by your audience, it may make sense to return for consistency and trust. However, assess the potential SEO impact and consider consulting professionals to ensure it aligns with your broader goals.

@courtney-lou Deciding whether to switch back to your old domain or stick with your current one depends on various factors:

                1. Reason for the Change: Why did you switch to the new domain in the first place? If the reasons for the switch are still valid, such as branding, SEO, or a change in business focus, sticking with the new domain might be the right choice.

                2. SEO Impact: Changing domains can affect your SEO rankings. If your new domain has gained authority and visibility over time, switching back could harm your search engine rankings. Analyze the potential SEO impact before deciding.

                3. Brand Consistency: Consider the impact on your brand identity. If your old domain aligns better with your brand and its reputation, switching back might make sense.

                4. User Familiarity: If your audience is familiar with your old domain and it's easier for them to remember, returning to it could improve user experience.

                5. Cost and Effort: Changing domains involves costs and efforts in terms of domain registration, site migration, and marketing adjustments. Evaluate if these investments are worth the potential benefits.

                6. Content and Backlinks: Assess how the switch will affect your existing content and backlinks. Proper redirects and backlink management are crucial to preserve your website's authority and traffic.

                7. Consultation: It can be helpful to consult with web developers, SEO experts, and colleagues who understand your business and website goals. They can provide valuable insights and recommendations.

Ultimately, the decision should align with your long-term business and website goals. Weigh the pros and cons carefully before making a choice, and consider the impact on your audience and online presence.

Switching back to your old domain or sticking with a new one depends on your specific circumstances and goals. Here are some factors to consider when making this decision:

Reason for the Change: Why did you initially switch to the new domain? If you had valid reasons, such as r, resolving technical issues, or improving SEO, it's essential to evaluate whether those reasons still apply.

SEO Impact: Changing domains can have a significant impact on your website's SEO. If your new domain has built up authority and rankings over time, switching back may cause a temporary drop in organic traffic and search engine rankings.

User Awareness: Consider how familiar your audience is with the new domain. If users have become accustomed to the new domain and it's now associated with your brand, switching back might create confusion.

Rebranding: If you initially switched due to a rebranding effort and have successfully rebranded your website with the new domain, switching back may not align with your branding strategy.

Technical Considerations: Assess the technical aspects of the switch, such as 301 redirects, sitemap updates, and canonical tags. Ensure that all technical SEO elements are correctly configured.

Content and Links: If you've created new content and acquired backlinks on the new domain, switching back could disrupt these efforts. Ensure that you can migrate content and backlinks effectively if you decide to switch.

Domain Age: Older domains often carry some SEO benefits due to their age. If your old domain has a long history, it may have an advantage in search rankings.

Cost and Resources: Changing domains can be resource-intensive and may require additional costs for domain registration, hosting, and technical support.

Consult SEO Experts: It's advisable to consult with SEO experts who can analyze your specific situation and provide recommendations based on your goals, domain history, and the competitive landscape in your industry.

User Experience: Consider the impact on user experience. Ensure that users can seamlessly transition between the old and new domains, and provide clear messaging if you decide to switch back.

Ultimately, the decision to switch back to your old domain should align with your current business goals and branding strategy. If the reasons for the initial domain change no longer apply or if there are compelling reasons to revert to the old domain, it can be a viable option. However, it's essential to plan the transition carefully to minimize any negative SEO impacts and ensure a smooth user experience during the switch.

Unsolved Huge Increase In Internal Links + Domain Authority Tanked

                            internal linking domain authority

Hey, I am very concerned about the link metrics I am seeing, really hoping someone can help. In October last year there were a total of 34.7K 'total links' attributed to my E-commerce website . This compared to 41.2k and 213k links attributed to my two main competitors. In November, my website had a forced update due to incompatibility issues my shopping cart version was having with the server on which it is hosted. (I was told by my web developers / hosting company that their server was upgraded.) This update created many problems such as checkout issues, page layout issues, sitemaps not automatically regenerating and the big one - it reverted back to http instead of https. Along with my developers, I spent 2 weeks fixing all of the issues until everything worked correctly and https was reinstated. After initial warnings from Moz, I have not received any critical crawler issues or warnings, big ranking drops etc since November. I was satisfied that all was ok. However, in November my 'total links' jumped to 81.5k and have since continued to balloon. December - 309.1k, January -335k, February - 665k, March - 716k, April - 719k, May - 742k, June - 751k. In the same period (November - June), my external links went from 5.3k - 8.7k. So it appears the huge increase in links are internal. In my latest report it states that 'internal follow links' are up by 8k and 'internal no follow links' are up by 1k. This is insane. I cannot understand why I have so many internal links and why they keep increasing. I maintain the website with updates, blog articles etc but no more than I have in the past several years. Worryingly, once this increase in links started being reported, my Domain Authority has also tanked. In October my DA was 37 (higher than my competitors) and has since dropped as low as 19. It has gone up to 21 this month (still significantly lower than my competitors). I have spent hours researching why this huge increase in internal links could be happening but have got nowhere. If anyone could advise what the issue could be and how I can fix it, I would be eternally grateful. Issues I have discovered along the way that may help with analysis:
My site has many 404s (hundreds) - all relate to urls of old images that have been removed from the website. The 'Top Hits' on my website are from blogs (some spammy) to these deleted image urls that return a 404. I don't use any plugins. I do get 'duplicate content' notices as my blog posts archive themselves and generate new urls - as an example - 'blog post name' archived December 2023. It may be the case that the old http urls have been redirected to https but I have no warnings for 'redirect issues' in Moz. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks in advance for any help.

                            PA and DA for Homepage

page authority domain authority internal linking homepage

I've been looking at the PA and DA scores for the homepage of websites we have built and have been comparing this to competitors. What I'm finding is that the PA score is always higher than the DA, however on competitors sites the PA is much higher in relation to the DA. What could be the reason for this? For example, some of our website homepages may have PA / DA scores such as the following: Website #1: PA37 DA25 (PA:DA = 1.48)
                            Website #2: PA31 DA21 (PA:DA = 1.47) However competitors often have figures like this: Website #3: PA40 DA21 (PA:DA 1.9)
Website #4: PA 25 DA 11 (PA:DA 2.27) I even saw one website with the following scores: Website #5: PA36 DA5 (PA:DA 7.2) How do you explain such a high Page Authority in relation to the domain authority for that site? When I look at the scores for our websites I often feel that the DA is at a good level, but the PA for the homepage doesn't seem as high as it could be compared to competitors. My initial thought was that maybe we had a lot of backlinks to other pages on the website (not the homepage) but this is not the case at all - pretty much all our backlinks are to the homepage. Could it be to do with internal linking structure? Any other ideas? Many thanks in advance for any help with this.

What are the SEO ramifications of domain redirection?

                            redirecting domain seo tactic

Hi Moz Community! I was just trying to set up our global site and got this message: "Redirect detected
We have detected that the domain bhaktimarga.org redirects to prodfront-coli.bhaktimarga.mediactive-network.net. We do not recommend tracking a redirect URL. Would you like to track prodfront-coli.bhaktimarga.mediactive-network.net for this campaign instead?"

Is this done for performance and masks the hosting provider domain? I haven't talked to website developers about this yet, but my main question is...Does this have any SEO ramification? Thanks so much,
                            Padma

Is it Ok to have multiple domains (separate website different content) rank for similar keywords?

                            multiple domains duplicate content

Is it 'OK' to have multiple domains in the following instance? Does Google actively discourage multiple (but completely different sites) domains from the same company appearing in the search results for the same and or similar keywords if the content is slightly different? This is where the 'main site' has the details, and you can purchase product, and the second site is a blog site only. We are creating a separate content blogsite; which would be on a second domain that will be related to one portion of content on main site. They would be linking back and forth, or maybe the blog site would just link over to the main site so they can purchase said product. This would be a similar scenario to give you an idea of how it would be structured: MAIN SITE: describes a few products, and you can purchase from this site SECOND SITE, different domain: a blog site that contains personal experiences with one of the products. BOTH sites will be linked back and forth....or as mentioned maybe the blog site could just link over to the 'main site' Logo would be a modified version of the main logo and look and feel of the sight would be similar but not exactly the same. MORE INFO: the main site has existed for way over 10 years, starting to gain some traction in an extremely competitive market, but does not rank super high, is gaining traction due to improvements in speed, content, onpage SEO, etc... So in addition to my main question of is this 'ok' to have this second domain, also will it hurt the rankings or negatively affect the 'main' site? Wondering about duplicate content issues, except it will be slightly different...

Is domain forwarding the same as a 301 redirect?

                            domain 301 redirect

Hi, I have an older domain with some SEO auth for varying pages and a newer domain that is for the brand. Right now there are some 301s for about 13 pages and we are currently moving servers. I was wondering if domain forwarding is the same as writing 301 redirects for each page or is it something different (302)?

Multiple URLs from One Domain on Page 1

                            multiple urls

Is it possible (and if it is possible, how difficult is it) to get multiple URLs from the same domain name to be indexed on the first page of Google for the same keyword or phrase? Assuming each URL has significantly different content of course... Context: A large real estate brand has 6 franchise offices in the same city. Each office has its own listing/landing page on the parent brand website. Each franchise owner wants their page on the website to rank for the term 'Christchurch real estate'. The homepage of the parent brand website currently ranks on the first page of Google for this search term, but none of the franchisee pages do. So my question is: with the right unique content on each franchisee page, supported by quality backlinks to each of the different offices, is it possible to get multiple franchisees listed on the first page of Google given that ultimately the 6 URLs are all attached to the same domain name? (And, if so, do you have any hot tips you can share to assist me on this uphill battle?)

                            WordPress Sub-directory for SEO

                            wordpress subdirectory domain authority

Hi There, I'm working on a WordPress site that includes a premium content blog with approx 900 posts. As part of the project, those 900 posts and other membership functionality will be moved from the main site to another site built specifically for content/membership. Ideally, we want the existing posts to remain on the root domain to avoid a loss in link juice/domain authority. We initially began setting up a WordPress Multisite using the sub-directory option. This allows for the main site to be at www.website.com and the secondary site to be at www.website.com/secondary. Unfortunately, the themes and plugins we need for the platform do not play nicely with WordPress Multisite, so we started seeking a new solution, and, discovered that a second instance of WordPress can be installed in a subdirectory on the server. This would give us the same subdirectory structure while bypassing WordPress Multisite and instead, having two separate single-site installs. Do you foresee any issues with this WordPress subdirectory install? Does Google care/know these are two separate WordPress installs and do we risk losing any link juice/domain authority?

Unsolved Moz doesn't find backlinks for months / link tracking list offline

link tracking list link explorer backlinks domain authority

                            Hi there
I want to share a big problem with you. Moz tracking list seems to be offline or having trouble finding links. I have an example:
The page where the backlink has been placed was created months ago. As you can see on the picture:
Link to the page is http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/profile/tableauxdumonde
Backlink on that page is https://ggongtime.com/ Picture shows clearly that the page of backlink (Microsoft) has been indexed and already has got it's own backlinks in Moz (8) but it is still not linking to the backlink website (ggongtime.com).
I've also attached a picture of page source where you can clearly see that it is a html link and is dofollow.
The problem remains since 3 months and I want to find out what is going on. This Microsoft page is one of example. There are hundreds of other pages being found, or not, and are still not showing up in Link Explorer on website's portfolio.
I want to know if there is a technical problem with link explorer, or anything else, because this is a serious problem for me. moz problem.png
